Position Library Assistant / Programmer  
Description

The Kaukauna Public Library is currently seeking 2 part-time Library Assistant: Programmer positions!  This is a 20 hour per week position working at our beautiful and historic Kaukauna Public Library.  

POSITION SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Library Director and/or the Assistant Director, the Library Assistant performs essential service desk functions such as checking in and out of materials, filling holds list, returning materials to the shelves, issuing new library cards, and assisting patrons with reference, directional and/or technological (computer usage, eBook loading, etc.) questions and history room services.

In addition, the Library Assistant-Programmer will:

  • Plan and present programs.
  • Participate in outreach events.
  • Help with publicity.
  • Follow a budget. 

Each Library Assistant is expected to come with knowledge of or be willing to acquire training to assist patrons with basic technology help.

POSITION DUTIES

  • Assists at service desk helping patrons, answering reference questions, issuing new library cards, filling and retrieving holds, and providing technical support for patrons at computer stations.
  • Checking out and checking in library materials.
  • Assists patrons with technology questions including computer or eBook related questions.
  • Shelves materials.
  • Reads and maintains order of the section of shelves assigned.
  • Maintains patrons adhere to library policies.
  • Call patrons to alert them of holds.
  • Assist patrons in renewing and issuing new library cards.
  • Assist patrons with library card issues and concerns.
  • Periodic emptying of book drop.
  • Receive and record money.
  • Use cash register.
  • Assist patrons with copy machine, faxing, laminating and printing.
  • Help patrons find and retrieve materials.
  • Promote library services and programs.
  • Work with a diverse population.
  • Uphold confidentiality and privacy of patrons.
  • Adhere to the Library Bill of Rights.
  • Perform detailed services related to specific areas of service as well as other duties as assigned by supervisors.

SPECIFIC POSITION DUTIES

  • Program planning and preparation.
  • Program implementation.
  • Library promotion and outreach off site as needed.
  • Set up and take down of programs.
  • Working with the Marketing Assistant for specific program marketing.
  • Create partnerships with local organizations.
  • Explore creative and innovative approaches to programming.
  • Operate programs within budget.
 
Position Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Educational Qualifications:  High school diploma, GRE, or suitable educational background experience and skills.
  • Library Experience: Experience planning and implementing educational and entertainment programs for people of all ages.
  • A friendly image projecting competence and courtesy.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Knowledge of cash handling and cash register procedures.
  • Basic computer skills, including, but not limited to, email, blogging, use of Microsoft Word software, etc.
  • Ability to learn and use new technology.
  • Willingness to learn new skills and take on additional tasks.
  • Ability to get along with a diverse population.
  • Ability to correct behavior of patrons in a polite but professional manner.
  • Ability to multi-task and remain focused in a fast paced environment.
  • Ability to follow and perform detailed directions and tasks.
  • Ability to prioritize work responsibilities and duties.
  • Ability to communicate clearly in written and spoken forms.
  • A basic working knowledge of English spelling, grammar, arithmetic, and reading.
  • Willingness to attend and participate in continuing education opportunities.
  • Willingness to work evenings and weekends.
  • Bilingual language skills a plus!

  • Monday 4-8p
  • Tuesday 12-4p
  • Wednesday 4-8p
  • Thursday 8a-12p
  • Friday 1-5p
  • Saturdays in a three week rotation during the school year

Schedule 2:

  • Wednesday 8a-12p

Please note: The interview will include a story telling demonstration.  Please bring a picture book appropriate for children to read aloud.
