The Town of Denton, population 1,657, is seeking a Town Manager. In Denton, you’ll find a real town, just small. Denton occupies 1.98 square miles, and is situated approximately 40 miles southeast of Winston-Salem, 40 miles southwest of Greensboro, and 20 miles west of Asheboro, NC. Within five miles of Denton, you’ll find High Rock Lake. High Rock is the 2nd largest lake in NC (15,000 acres) and offers some of the best fishing in the state. Within 15 miles of the Town, you’ll find Tuckertown Reservoir, Badin Lake, and the Yadkin/PeeDee River. Less than 10 miles south of Denton is the 51,000 acre Uwharrie National Forest. Outdoor enthusiasts will love the broad range of outdoor activities including boating, swimming, skiing, fishing, camping, hiking, hunting, and golf available within minutes of the Town.
Denton is a full service municipality and the Town is engaging in capital improvement projects in facilities, utilities, and streets. Economic development related to attracting and retaining businesses especially retail and restaurants is a goal of the Board. Departments are well run by experienced professional department heads. Therefore, team direction is a key aspect the Board of Commissioners is expecting from its next Town Manager. Denton also has a very solid financial position. The successful candidate will have the ability to communicate and effectively represent the Town publicly while positively engaging citizens. The basic desired qualifications include a bachelor’s degree in public administration, business, finance, or a related field. A candidate may distinguish themselves with a master’s degree. The Town seeks a public administrator with a significant level of progressive experience, perferably in NC municipal administration, including planning and directing the delivery of public services. The Town Denton Manager must understand, appreciate, and engage with small town public administration. This is demonstrated by being approachable and accessible. The work requires establishing trust through relationship building with staff, the Town Board, and citizens. Experience with planning and zoning is necessary as the Town Manager serves as the Zoning Administrator for the Town. The Town seeks a candidate with demonstrated skills in leadership, administration, budgeting, and who applies structure and looks for efficiency. The Board would consider appointment of an individual that has the leadership, management, and local government qualifications sought, but does not specifically have Town Manager experience. The Town encourages the Manager to be a member of the International City Management Association (ICMA) and/or the North Carolina City and County Management Association (NCCCMA) and adhere to the professional code of ethics.
