Python Django Web Developer

About the Organization As a research and action organization, Center for Policing Equity (CPE) produces analyses identifying and reducing the causes of racial disparities in public safety. Using data-driven approaches to social justice, we use science to create levers for social, cultural, and policy change.

We are research scientists, race and equity experts, data virtuosos, and community trainers. We use data to build a more fair and just system. We partner with law enforcement and communities. Our aim is to bridge the divide of communication, generational mistrust, and suffering. But most of all, we are the path that science can forge towards public safety, community trust, and racial equity.

Position Description

The Center for Policing Equity is seeking a temporary contract Full-stack Web Developer to build a web application for our Compstat for Justice (C4J) program. C4J is a new initiative aimed at providing statistical analyses to law enforcement agencies (LEAs) in support of their efforts to reduce racial disparities in policing outcomes.

The product being developed is a lightweight web app to guide internal users through the C4J program experience. The app should walk users through a set of guiding questions, record their responses, and allow them to both view/edit their past responses and export their work to a common format (e.g., Excel spreadsheet).

Since CPE has several staff members proficient in Python, the app should be built using Django. Front-end requirements will be minimal since the app is for internal use, and the use of front-end frameworks like Bootstrap is preferred. The web app will be hosted in AWS on an Ubuntu server.

Key Responsibilities

  • Refine existing user requirements
  • Write the application code and track its development in a Github repository
  • Design and build the front end based on user interviews
  • Set up and configure the database
  • Launch the web service on AWS
  • Conduct unit testing and user testing
  • Update initial product based on user feedback
  • Write documentation (including a data dictionary for the database) and perform handoff of the product to CPE staff members

Qualifications (required)

  • 5+ years of professional web development experience
  • Ability to build sets of technical requirements from user interviews and design user flows
  • Advanced Python skills, including Django
  • Experience in Linux shell scripting (Bash/Zsh)
  • Experience building and administering common open-source relational databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL, etc)
  • Experience building and managing web applications using AWS services
  • Experience designing web front-ends using common front-end frameworks like Bootstrap
  • Familiar with HTML5/CSS3 standards
  • Excellent communication and time management skills
  • Passionate about social justice issues, particularly policing and racial equity

EOE Statement The Center for Policing Equity strives to build a diverse team that is inclusive of multiple perspectives and welcoming for people of all backgrounds. Women and members of underrepresented communities are especially encouraged to apply.
