Summary

The Business Manager manages the day-to-day financial work, budget, monthly audit, and related office capacities of the organization. The Business Manager is organized, detail oriented, thorough, and able to manage multiple projects simultaneously.     

Essential Functions

The following functions are representative of the Business Manager including, but not limited to:  

  • Accounting and Financial Management
    • Work with Department Directors to craft the annual budget.
    • Manage the organizational audit and 990 filing
    • Manage invoicing and payment for all grants and fee-for-service projects
    • Collaborate with staff on grants/funding proposals
    • Coordinate, manage, and track various public and private source grant initiatives
    • Advises and reviews development initiatives for fundraising efforts
    • Manage operational cash flow and timely reconciliation/processing of accounts receivable/payable
    • Monitors and coordinates the external Accountant to ensure sound financial performance in line with CT goals and GAAP principles  
  • Insurance
    • Manages insurances and policy renewals, for example: Property Insurances, General Liability, Automobile, Workers Compensation, CT Commercial Property Insurance, Directors and Officers Insurance, others
    • Oversees the organizational IT contractor w/ the Office Manager
  • Federal and Local Government Regulations
    • Ensure that CT is compliant on all required documentation and filings for all local, state, and Federal filings
  • Office Layout / IT Capacity
    • Collaborates with the Office Manager to ensure adequate office staff accommodations for space, desks, phones, IT needs, and others
  • Payroll and Human Resources
    • Coordinate with HR Manager on salary, timekeeping and related items including staff pay, time off accruals, health insurance management (health, dental, short- and long-term disabilities, life insurance) and accessory benefit plans (TASC, WMATA, 403b retirement plan)
    • Assist the health benefit annual renewals and required government filings / notifications that pertain to the plans
  • Connects people to trees
  • Other duties as assigned

Supervisory Responsibilities

Directly supervises a team of Associate level staff.

Working Conditions

The incumbent works primarily in an office, infrequently outside (see below). 

The incumbent in this position typically uses the following equipment:

  • Computers/Printer/Copier/Telephone/Smartphones/Tablets

Physical Demands:

  • While this is primarily a desk job, all CT employees may engage in tree planting/related activities in outdoor environments, year-round in the heat, cold and inclement weather and must have suitable clothing.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the incumbent is regularly required to talk, hear, stand; walk; use hands and fingers to handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms.  The incumbent is occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, lift files, open filing cabinets, bend or stand on a stool, etc.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position. The incumbent must be able and willing to work evenings, weekends, and extended hours when needed.

Travel

Travel is primarily local, although some out of the area travel and overnights may be expected.

 
Position Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • Five or more years of experience in finance, business management, accounting, or related field
  • Bachelor’s degree in economics, accounting, business management, or related field or an equivalent combination of experience and education
  • Strong skills in producing clear and accurate financial reports
  • Knowledge of grant writing and non-profit accounting
  • Knowledge of and ability to use financial software systems
  • Demonstrated experience supervising, managing, and inspiring a team
  • Demonstrated ability and success working in a team environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in economics, accounting, business management, or related field
  • Proficiency in QuickBooks and SalesForce
  • Knowledge of payroll and employee benefits programs
  • Knowledge of office management
