Walters Recycling & Refuse, Inc. is currently hiring for a Planner/Scheduler- Maintenance.

Walters a leading provider of waste collection and recycling services to both the public and private sectors in the Twin Cities metropolitan area. We are a family-owned and operated business started in 1988 with a fleet of over 75 compressed natural gas (CNG) and Diesel Trucks and over 100,000 customers.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Director of Operations, the Maintenance Planner/Scheduler is responsible for assisting the organization in achieving effective asset performance through the systematic application of work planning and data management, and acting as the key point of daily, proactive contact to keep Operations personnel informed on work pending status.

This is a key role that assists in balancing/managing the daily/weekly and seasonal operational needs with the workload in the shop and outside vendors. The Planner/Scheduler will maximize the efficiency of maintenance work performed by ensuring that work orders have been thoroughly analyzed to determine the exact scope of the job. The Planner will ensure that the necessary resources have been identified and are staged and ready for job execution before scheduling and starting work.

The Maintenance Planner/Scheduler provides a key link in the work management process, being responsible for the proactive portion of maintenance activities. The Planner/Scheduler is expected to identify, plan, coordinate and communicate to all stakeholders the activities that will be performed in the future, not just day-to-day activities.

Principal Responsibilities

  1. Create a detailed schedule for the entire Maintenance Department based on staffing levels and the priority of work to be done using a predetermined priority system.
  2. Create job plans for maintenance work orders that include craft skills, parts, tools, equipment, information, permits, and expertise (internal, external, equipment) required. Develop job standards to ensure work is performed within acceptable and optimal limits and meets all safety and compliance requirements.
  3. Use previous experience, CMMS history, and subject matter experts to determine manpower requirements and the length of time needed to execute a work order.
  4. Create and maintain equipment files with standard job packages, including accurate and complete Bills of Material and any relevant technical information to ensure continual improvement of planned work execution.
  5. Facilitate routine cross-functional planning meetings with the assigned business units to review CMMS backlog and verify work priorities for the upcoming weekly schedule. Coordinate upcoming maintenance work with the Operations schedule to ensure access to equipment at the agreed-upon time.
  6. Develop, maintain, and report on metrics relevant to the planning process, such as schedule compliance, planning accuracy, backlog aging, and budgetary compliance.
  7. Optimize the Preventative Maintenance program by evaluating task lists, part requirements, and frequencies, with input from maintenance technicians, supervisors, and the inventory management team.
  8. Coordinate with Inventory Management team on decisions to send components out for refurbishment, minimum/maximum stock levels, addition, and removal of items from stock, creation of job kits, and requests for critical spares.
  9. Develop daily, weekly, and monthly detailed schedules for maintenance supervisor. Develop a six-week forward plan.
  10. Serve as chairperson for the weekly scheduling meeting.
  11. Participates in Total Process Reliability (TPR) Program.
  12. All other duties as assigned.

  • Weekly Schedule Compliance > 80%
  • Planning Accuracy +/- 15%
  • PM Schedule Compliance >80%
  • Planning Meeting Schedule Compliance >90%
  • Planning Meeting Attendance > 80%
  • Planned Backlog = 4 weeks
  • Backlog Aging (Work orders >45 days old) <= 10%
