Who You Are:

You are an experienced Lead Data Engineer that will join our Data team to support TrueLearn’s data platform and analytics efforts. As a key member of the Data team, you will be responsible for designing, building, maintaining, and documenting TrueLearn's data workflows and pipelines. You will engage in database architecture design and data modeling discussions with TrueLearn’s Data Scientists, Software Engineers, and Product Managers, as well as participate in developing and enforcing data quality, security, and governance policies across the organization. You will be a key contributor to strategic planning for TrueLearn’s data platform and collaborate with a wide range of stakeholders and functional teams. You’ll have the opportunity to work in all aspects of data, including data processing, data management, data governance, data architecture, and more. You will mentor others and become an expert about TrueLearn’s data platform for the organization. We’re looking for a Lead Data Engineer that is deeply technical, analytical, articulate, team-oriented, business-minded, and mission driven to help us push TrueLearn’s platform to the next level and position us well for expansion into new market verticals. What You’ll Do:

Responsibilities for the Lead Data Engineer role include:

  • Be a key contributor to the design, implementation, automation, and documentation of TrueLearn’s data platform (data architecture, processes, and pipelines).
  • Collaborate with Data Scientists, Software Engineers, Product Managers, and others across the organization to assist with data-related technical issues and data infrastructure needs.
  • Use advanced knowledge of SQL and relational databases, query authoring, and familiarity with a wide variety of databases to analyze internal/external data and processes to answer specific business questions, as well as identify opportunities for optimization and performance improvements.
  • Build end-to-end processes for supporting data transformation (standardization, linking, and matching), data architecture, and metadata storage.
  • Manipulate, process, and extract value from large disconnected datasets.
  • Partner closely with Data Scientists to create complex data processing pipelines to support analytics efforts, data science solutions, and machine learning model deployments.
  • Partner closely with Software Engineers and Product Managers to assist in the definition of the TrueLearn platform’s software architecture, specifically around requirements about data ingestion, data processes, and data infrastructure.
  • Create data models and speak articulately to the tradeoffs of different modeling approaches.
  • Write clean, self-documenting, and iterative code.
  • Leverage continuous delivery practices to deploy, support, and operate data pipelines.
  • Contribute to the development of data quality, security, and governance policies and educate the organization about their importance.
  • Assist in the development of an ecosystem to support TrueLearn’s cross-functional teams in managing and using their data, as well as research, recommend, and apply new technologies to solve technical challenges.
 
Position Requirements

What You Know:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience with SQL and relational databases.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience with ETL or ELT or building and automating custom data pipelines.
  • Experience with Microsoft SQL Server.
  • Familiarity with cloud data warehouses such as RedShift or Snowflake.
  • Experience with source control management systems (TFS, Git).
  • Familiarity with data tools such as Looker, Tableau, or Power BI.
  • Experience with agile software development methodology and working on an agile team.

 

You Would Love an Opportunity to Work WIth:

  • Snowflake cloud-based data platform.
  • Containerization technology (Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Microsoft SQL Server.

  • Machine learning and data science solutions.

 

Bonus Points:

  • Knowledge of or experience working in education technology or institutional analytics is a plus.
  • Knowledge of or experience working in academic medicine is another plus.
  • Strong drive to learn and master new technologies and techniques.
  • Ability to mentor others and become an expert about TrueLearn’s data platform.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including presentation skills.
