Mechanical Engineer

Zepher, Inc is an innovative and rapidly growing contract manufacturing company located in the Columbia River Gorge that provides defect-free products to aerospace, military and commercial customers. We have invested in new facilities, state of the art equipment, and highly qualified, motivated people to expand our manufacturing capabilities and better meet our customer’s needs for high quality products, produced under tight timelines. We are currently seeking a Mechanical Engineer to contribute to the overall success of the company.

The Mechanical Engineer is a key contributor to new product development at Zepher. This person supports the design, manufacturing and production of often highly-regulated, complex electromechanical products. The Mechanical Engineer provides engineering expertise for these NPI projects involving significant design revision strict quality requirements and deadlines. The person in this role researches, develops, tests and troubleshoots the technical design manufacturability of the projects in the Advanced Programs portfolio.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Director of Advanced Programs, the Mechanical Engineer will:

  • Provide engineering expertise for NPI projects involving significant design revisions, strict quality requirements, and deadlines.
  • Review engineering specifications, drawings, and related information to expand current knowledge of manufacturing methods and procedures.
  • Evaluate and improve manufacturing methods, utilizing knowledge of product design, materials and parts, fabrication processes, tooling and production equipment capabilities, assembly methods, and quality control standards.
  • Solve technical design and manufacturability problems of mechanical systems.
  • Research and estimate costs – material, labor, tooling, and others – to finalize and build prototype low-rate production products.
  • Contribute to and/or manage product design projects with accountability for meeting all parameters including cost, schedule, and performance targets.
  • Maintain all documents pertaining to project. This includes work instructions, drawings, contracts, risk management plans, special instructions and any other production documents used to complete a project or required by the customer/stakeholder.
  • Participate in internal and external design reviews, providing input on definition of product sufficient to allow inspection and verification to meet design intent.
  • Research and creates proof of concept and performs modeling/CAD analysis and prototype development.
  • Perform and monitor tests, document outcomes and confirm design requirements.
  • Investigate reports of defective, damaged, or malfunctioning parts, assemblies, equipment, or systems to determine nature and scope of problem. Coordinate teams to perform process failure mode effects analysis (PFMEA).

Position Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Engineering; Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Aerospace Engineering preferred.
  • 2 or more years of experience in working in a mechanical manufacturing/prototyping environment. Strong preference for candidates with electro-mechanical (mechatronic) experience.
  • Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing per ASME Y14.5M and/or Y14.41
  • ISO 9000 Quality Standards and requirements; AS9100 preferred.
  • High level of proficiency with SolidWorks and/or other 3D CAD software.
  • High level of proficiency with MS Office suite including Microsoft Office (Excel).
  • Working knowledge of ERP/MRP systems and SharePoint (or equivalent), in a manufacturing environment preferred.
  • Advanced interpersonal skills, along with the ability to communicate effectively and maintain credibility with customers, suppliers, and across all levels in the business.
  • Superior problem solving and analytical skills; demonstrated passion for solving problems and operational excellence.
  • Strong writing, organizational and communication skills.
  • Able to travel, work and communicate with team members, customers and suppliers as needed during non-standard and unscheduled hours.
  • Physical activities can include standing, walking, lifting, pushing or carrying heavy objects, sitting for long periods of time, keyboarding, other computer and desk work, auto and plane travel.
