The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures furthers the understanding, celebration, and preservation of cinema through inclusive and accessible exhibitions, screenings, programs, initiatives, and collections. Welcoming visitors from Los Angeles and around the world, the Museum works in active partnership with motion picture artists and specialists, scholars, staff, and diverse communities to contextualize and challenge dominant narratives around cinema, inspiring discourse, connection, joy, and discovery.

The Controller is an ideal position for a solid finance person looking to take the next step in their career. The Controller will be the architect of the Museum’s cash handling procedures and cash management reporting. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in cash handling and setting up and launching processes and procedures to support safe and effective cash handling. The Controller leads the Academy Museum's accounting functions; however, many of the accounting functions will be supported by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, such as payroll, tax reporting, and accounts payable processing. The Controller will primarily focus on the operations and high volume of transactions at the Museum. You will be a key part of senior leadership, reporting directly to the Chief Operating Officer and working closely with the Chief Financial Officer of the Academy, and you will oversee a staff of two accountants.

You Will:

  • Work with the Operations team on developing and drafting procedures for appropriate accounting and cash handling for revenue for retail, ticketing, events, membership, and programming.
  • Manage bank relationships, allocate cash balances, monitor transactions, create cash flow reports, and evaluate cash flow in conjunction with Academy accounting team.
  • Plan, direct and coordinate all accounting operational functions.
  • Provide management with information vital to the decision-making process.
  • Develop cash management reporting format and analyze cash management report performance to make necessary procedure improvements.
  • Provide management with information vital to the decision-making process.
  • Serve as Museum point person for accounting close processes and audit/financial statement preparation.
  • Issue timely and complete financial documents.
  • Recommend benchmarks against which to measure the performance of Museum operations.
  • Calculate and issue financial and operating metrics.
 
Position Requirements

You Have:

  • Previous experience as a controller not needed, but experience with cash-handling is a must.
  • 7+ years of experience in accounting.
  • 3+ years of experience in a museum or similar public-facing environment looking after large volumes of cash transactions.
  • Experience in an organization with multiple revenue sources (philanthropic and earned) and diverse programs and cost centers is a plus.
  • Financial Reporting experience.
