Work Status: Temporary Full-time (1.0 FTE)

Contract: 6-month contract with possibility of extension

Dates: April 1, 2021 - October 1, 2021

Salary: $25.89/hr - $30.95/hr

 

Description:

The Possibility Engineering and Research Lab (PEARL) at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital focuses on conceptualizing, developing, and evaluating innovative technologies that create possibilities for young people with disabilities. These technologies allow them to participate more meaningfully in arts, music, physical activities, and therapies.

Our team works extensively in the development of mixed-reality games that provide kids with motivating environments for exercise and  learning and socialplay. In this role, you will expand our existing movement-tracking therapy game, Bootle Blast (https://youtu.be/D1fQsJqt8JI), to include mini-games that target trunk and lower body exercises. Using the latest interactive gaming technologies (Orbbec 3D cameras and Unity) and lots of creativity, you will push the current limits of technology to help create a world of possibility for all kids!

 

Key Responsibilities

In this position, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Understand the goals of physical and occupational therapies
  • Design and create interactive mini-games that address these goals. You will be involved in all aspects of game creation, including but not limited to concept creation, level design,  user testing, and software development
  • Learn the current state of the art in interactive gaming technologies
  • Work with clinicians, engineers and researchers to assist you in your role

 

Key Qualifications:

An undergraduate degree in engineering or computer science with a specialization in game development or any college level degree/diploma/certificate specializing in game development (or working towards completion of any of the above)   

  • Experience in C#, Kotlin, Java, Swift or Objective C,  with proficiency in at least one
  • Experience in developing mobile games for Android and/or iOS
  • Experience working in Unity or other commercial game engines
  • Acquainted with all processes involved in the production of a game
  • Previous experience on software development projects, especially video games
  • A creative mindset with an ability to create unique and innovative game concepts
  • Formal musical training or experience playing a musical instrument would be an asset
  • Strong problem solving skills with a desire to learn
  • Experience working with and/or designing for children
  • Ability to work collaboratively as a member of a multidisciplinary team
  • Providing examples of previous game development projects with an explanation of your contributions
