Description

The Margaret Herrick Library is seeking an experienced researcher to work in support of catalogers and archival processors of motion picture-related materials. You will be responsible for in-depth research and the creation and verification of local authority records for film and television titles and personal and corporate names in collection databases. You have expert knowledge of film history, the filmmaking process and motion picture industry practices, and familiarity with library cataloging standards and resources.

 

Responsibilities:

  • In accordance with library standards and guidelines, research and create local authority records for film and television titles and personal and corporate names in Axiell database containing holdings information for Margaret Herrick Library and Academy Film Archive.
  • Conduct original research as needed in print and online resources.
  • Verify and update existing authority records.
  • Manage requests for record creation and updating from library catalogers and archival processors.
  • Confirm that records in other cataloging modules have been correctly linked to authority records.
  • Work with catalogers and subject specialists in developing data entry standards and protocols.
  • Participate in ongoing data clean-up.
  • Create and update records in other credits-based databases as needed.
  • Assist with credits-based research projects as needed.
 
Position Requirements
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in film studies, film history or related discipline.
  • Master’s degree in library and information science or archival studies from an accredited program desirable.
  • Minimum of two years working as a professional researcher. Previous film industry experience preferred.
  • Expert knowledge of film history, the filmmaking process and motion picture industry practices.
  • Demonstrated research expertise with print and online resources.
  • Ability to assess reliability of information sources.
  • Consistent accuracy and attention to detail while maintaining a high level of productivity.
  • Demonstrated copy editing and proofreading skills.
  • Proficiency with Word, Excel, database systems and Web-based data entry procedures.
  • Reading knowledge of languages other than English desirable
  • Ability to exercise critical judgement.
  • Ability to work independently and in collaboration.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to balance multiple projects and effectively set priorities.
  • Ability to kneel, bend or stoop to access filed materials and lift boxes up to 25 lbs.
