Community Gardener 

Description

The Community Gardener increases access to healthy foods by maintaining community garden sites and providing educational opportunities to the community. The Community Gardener plans, implements, and maintains all aspects of the community garden sites. The Community Gardener is an active member of Pamanaknúwit, Yellowhawk’s health promotion team. The Community Gardener is an active member of the First Foods and Food Systems Workgroup, a collaboration between staff of the CTUIR Cultural Resources Protection Program and Yellowhawk’s Pamanaknúwit team. All duties and responsibilities will be performed in accordance with the Yellowhawk Mission and Vision statement.

Essential Duties

  1. Plans, implements and maintains Yellowhawk Garden Sites. This includes upkeep on the appearance of the garden sites, creating an inviting space for the community.
  2. Recruits volunteers for the garden and provides opportunities, such as garden days, for community members to assist in garden activities.
  3. Organizes and supervises garden volunteers, student workers, and interns to assist with garden projects on an on-going basis.
  4. Distributes garden produce to community members.
  5. Collaborates with CTUIR education programs and schools to provide garden education to youth.
  6. Actively participates as a team member of the Pamanaknúwit Team (health promotion) and works towards meeting quarterly objectives in the Yellowhawk Annual Work Plan.
  7. Collaborates with the Pamanaknúwit Team to identify and implement strategies for the CTUIR community that increase access to healthy foods, opportunities for physical activity, breastfeeding support, and nutrition education.
  8. Actively participate as a member of the First Foods and Food Systems workgroup.
  9. Collect and use data to identify and implement health promotion strategies.
  10. May write and produce leaflets, posters, videos and brochures to provide timely and accurate health education messages.
  11. Identifies areas of improvement through performance management tracking and conducts quality improvement studies.
  12. May require some grant management, data collecting and reporting.
  13. Plans and implements the Backyard Garden Program, including participant recruitment and participant education.
  14. Plans and facilitates garden education classes for CTUIR community members, including Seed to Supper.
  15. Other duties as assigned.

 

 
Position Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  1. High school diploma or Equivalent
  2. One (1) – Two (2) years’ demonstrated knowledge and experience with vegetable gardening and or farming.
  3. Demonstrated knowledge regarding composting, fertilizing, and greenhouse maintenance.
  4. Must be able to work independently and have experience working with the community and/or school groups.
  5. Prior experience working with Microsoft programs (MS Office, MS Word, MS Outlook, MS Excel)
  6. Must be able to organize and present group information sessions using audio-visual aids.
  7. Must demonstrate ability to plan and ensure delivery of community education.
  8. Individual must have excellent communication skills, both verbal and writing.
  9. Must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain insurance requirements to operate General Services Administration vehicles.
  10. Represents Yellowhawk with a respected and viable presence in the community.
  11. Must submit to and pass a reference and criminal background check.
  12. Must submit to and pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol screening.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Master Gardener Certification preferred, or willingness to obtain within one year.
  2. Associate’s Degree or equivalent in related field.
