About the Organization The Houston SPCA, founded in 1924, is Houston's first and largest animal protection organization and shelter. Our mission is to promote commitment to and respect for all animals and free them from suffering, abuse and exploitation. The Houston SPCA is a private, non-profit charity, funded entirely by donations, which receives no funding from the Government, United Way or national animal groups.

Description

This position is responsible for managing the Accounts Payable function of the Houston SPCA, while having Account Reconciliation responsibility for key accounts reporting to the Accounting Manager.

Essential Functions of the Position:

  • Adhere to the organization's financial operations and accounting practices based on generally accepted accounting principles; ensure transparent financial information and ethical behavior standards; advise staff on organization's financial policies and procedures.
  • Manage the Accounts Payable full cycle function.
  • Manage the Time and Attendance reconciliations for employees.
  • Assist the monthly close process, for the organization.
  • Responsible for recording cash receipts, to the organization.
  • Woking with the development team to reconcile and record donations each month.
  • Responsible for the reconciliation of some key general ledger accounts, for the organization.
  • Serve as a principal steward of the organization's resources, ensuring that all resources are utilized properly, legally and ethically.
  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory and business practices related to financial management.
  • Support the Accounting Manager during the independent audit, and provide any supporting documents required for the Audit & 990 tax return.
  • Work closely with the Accounting Manager as it pertains to preparing ad hoc reports.
  • Protects all confidential information, including donors, clients, animals and internal communications.
  • Performs additional responsibilities as assigned.
 
Position Requirements

Knowledge, skill and abilities needed to perform the essential functions of this position:

  • Passion for the mission of the Houston SPCA.
  • A minimum of 8 years of accounting/financial experience.
  • Non-profit experience an advantage.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (proficient to advanced level in Excel specifically).
  • Proficiency in finance/accounting software (Financial Edge working knowledge an advantage).
  • Must possess working knowledge of regulatory areas pertaining to payroll and general business financial conditions.
  • Ability to function independently, manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships, build consensus with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Must represent the Houston SPCA in a professional manner in all situations with the public, volunteers and staff.
  • Excellent communication skills, including written, oral, interpersonal and presentation skills.
  • Be insurable under Houston SPCA auto policy.
  • Able to drive, stand, bend, squat, walk, and talk for up to eight hours a day; able to lift up to 25 pounds. Able to endure moderate (office) to high (shelter) noise level and exposure to animals.
