About the Organization The Museum of Life and Science is one of North Carolina's top family destinations, located less than five miles from downtown Durham. Situated on 84-acres, our interactive science park includes a two-story science center, one of the largest butterfly conservatories on the East Coast and beautifully landscaped outdoor exhibits which are safe havens for rescued black bears, lemurs, and endangered red wolves. Other popular attractions include over 60 species of live animals, Dinosaur Trail, Ellerbe Creek Railway, and Hideaway Woods. The Director of Human Resources and Inclusion supports the Museum by leading and fulfilling all human resource initiatives and building a culture that attracts and retains staff and volunteers committed to the Museum’s mission. Leads all human resources operations, talent acquisition, staff engagement efforts and other critical processes managed by the Museum’s HR team. This position will further advance and transform the Museum’s commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) through collaboration with stakeholders to direct, coordinate, and implement programs across the organization to achieve equitable opportunities for all team members. Working with Museum leaders, staff, and the surrounding community, the position will reinforce a sense of engagement, shared accountability, and ownership for EDI efforts across the institution.


  • Acts as a strategic advisor to the Vice president of Administration on all human resources issues and partners with Museum executive team for improvement of the Museum's policies, procedures, and practices in employee relations.
  • Provides perspective, insights, and knowledge in a consultative manner; partnering with all operational groups to implement EDI initiatives. Charged with setting clear goals, and benchmarks, providing guidance, and coordinating the implementation of EDI initiatives and efforts throughout the Museum.
  • Maintain knowledge of federal and state employment legislation and seek to gain necessary compliance in employee relations matters through the organization.
  • Communicate changes in the policies and procedures and work with supervisors and managers to implement across the Museum.
  • Assist executive team in the review, preparation and administration of the Museum’s wage and salary structure.
  • Evaluate and oversee the employment life cycle beginning with on-boarding and extending through exit interviews. Seek to establish a culture that attracts and retains a staff committed to the Museum’s mission.
  • Consult with legal counsel as appropriate on employment matters.
  • Work directly with managers to assist them in carrying out their responsibilities on employee matters.
  • Evaluate and recommend staff development opportunities.
  • Develop and maintain Paychex HRIS.
  • Serve on Green Team, Diversity & Inclusion and Safety committees.
  • Evaluate annual benefits renewal process, lead benefits enrollment, and provide information to staff regarding benefits.
  • Support VP for Administration with assorted duties, including but not limited to risk management, special project planning and implementation and HR budget input
  • Develop, coordinate, and deliver various trainings throughout the year.
  • Actively cultivate strong working relationships with all managers and supervisors and work to maintain a strong understanding of their departments’ needs and challenges.
  • Oversee volunteer program to maintain a dedicated trained volunteer staff.
  • Train as an Emergency Coordinator and be available to assist in case of emergencies.
  • Oversees the processing of payroll through Paychex.
  • Additional duties as needed.
Position Requirements


  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Psychology, Social Work or related field
  • 5+ years of experience as an HR generalist
  • 3+ years in a supervisory role in an HR department
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge of federal and NC employment laws
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience as an EDI subject matter expert.
  • HR related technology and HRIS proficiency
  • Strong computer literacy, including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Office 365
  • Strong commitment to the Museum’s mission and goals
  • Work is performed both in a typical office environment as well as outdoors during special events.
  • Demonstrated commitment and experience developing and providing effective, mission-oriented, and complaint HR support.


  • PHR/SPHR certification
  • Master’s degree in HR management or equivalent
  • Prior experience in benefits compliance
  • Prior experience in compensation management including benchmarking
  • Prior experience processing payroll or oversight of payroll processing through a third-party service
