Description

Position Description:

The Horticulturist/Grounds Maintenance Specialist performs semi-skilled work on the 82 acre, historical, Olmsted designed Louisville, KY campus of Masonic Homes Kentucky and occasionally other MHKY owned properties.

Knowledge and performance of duties that include, but not limited to: Promoting and maintaining good plant health throughout MHKY campus(es). Flower, shrub, tree planting. Proper trimming/pruning of shrubs and trees, landscape design installation and maintenance. Turf care: power seeding, sodding, pesticide/herbicide/fertilizer applications. Weeding, mulching, over all maintenance of Landscape beds throughout. Use and general care of various power equipment and tools used in grounds/landscaping tasks. Basic irrigation knowledge. Snow/ice removal, leaf removal, trash, wildlife management. Participation with resident community garden and other possible horticulture related educational opportunities in MHKY organization.

This position will be responsible for following 'Best practices' for landscape installation, maintenance, pest and disease identification and follow-up care. Working alone or with a team on tasks and duties. Continual communication with Vice President and Asst. Director of Grounds and Landscape and department crewmembers. This position requires quality, timeliness, and safety on all projects, making sure they work accurately and efficiently.

While performing the duties of the job, the employee is frequently required to:

  • Ability to lift, push, carry 30-50 lbs.
  • Use hands to finger, handle, or feel plants, soil, tools, or controls.
  • Reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, climb or balance.
  • Stand or walk for prolonged periods to perform duties.
  • Use, carry, operate power equipment for up to an hour at a time.

Work conditions:

  • Regularly works outside in most weather conditions-Heat, rain, cold, snow- be prepared with proper clothing
  • Fast paced with the ability to change tasks as needed or as priorities change. *Possible 'on-call' for inclement weather conditions (snow/ice/wind/rain storms) occasionally required to work a partial weekend day for events.
  • Ability to work in an ethnically diverse workplace.
  • Maintain a regular and reliable attendance record. Full-time: M-F 7:30 a.m.-4:00 p.m.* (see above exceptions)

Position Requirements

Minimum qualifications preferred:

  • 2 - 4 years of verifiable knowledge (associates/bachelor’s degree) AND work experience in the Landscape/horticulture/ Grounds maintenance field. Combination of education and experience considered. Plant ID and
  • Trade professional organization certifications a plus. (IE: Certified Arborist, Nursery professional, horticulture)
  • Valid KY driver‘s license with good driving record
  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Proof of eligibility to work in United States (I-9)
  • Plant ID and landscape maintenance/installation
  • KY Commercial Pesticide applicator’s license (or the ability to obtain within 90 days of start)
