Student Manager – Fitness and Wellness (Recreational Sports)
Definition and Purpose
Under the supervision of the Assistant Director – Recreational Sports, the Student Manager - Fitness & Wellness Programs is responsible for supervision of Personal Trainers and supporting the Assistant Coordinator-Fitness programs at the Cal Poly Recreation Center. This position works closely with the recreational sports leadership team and collaborates with other campus programs. This position requires effective communication with ASI full-time and student staff, as well as participants regarding programs and services.
In order to maximize the student manager’s personal development and ensure that their experience with ASI is broad based, incumbents will be assigned additional responsibilities beyond their specific program or staff area.

Educational Requirements and Qualifying Experience
Must be a currently enrolled student at Cal Poly with a minimum of 6 units. All ASI student staff must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 at Cal Poly. Graduate students must carry 4 units/3.0 cumulative GPA at Cal Poly.

Knowledge of Windows based computer systems (Microsoft Office).

Maintain current First Aid, CPR, AED certifications required.
NASM, NSCA, ACSM, ACE, or equivalent personal trainer certification preferred.
Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by?maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere.
Ability to establish and maintain effective?working relationships within a diverse population and with those from?various cultural backgrounds, specific needs, or limitations.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Supervise, schedule, and manage staff of 8 to 12 personal trainers.
Assist in developing and conducting annual performance evaluations.
Train employees in essential duties, customer service and risk management.
Initiate and/or manage staff coaching, discipline and feedback for staff area.
Participate in leadership development training with immediate supervisor and student manager leadership team.
Complete weekly administrative duties, including but not limited to developing agendas and conducting regular staff meetings.
Ability to facilitate meetings and assign committee related tasks to staff and volunteers.
Work collaboratively with a variety of campus and non-campus groups.
Assist with development and implementation of marketing campaigns for the program.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Abide by and enforce all ASI and campus security regulations regarding confidential and private information.
Effectively manage applicable internal and external communication outlets.
Ensure all area manuals, procedures and resources are accurate and easily available to staff.
Display awareness of all ASI and staff area policies; enforce policies as necessary.
Maintain the integrity of the ASI philosophy and brand.
Produce regular reports, reviews, and assessments of staff area.
Exhibit punctuality and dependability by maintaining a consistent work schedule.
Serve as an information source of Recreational Sports and ASI programs and services.
Maintain professionalism in the workplace including but not limited to attire, behavior, and language.
Maintain familiarity with emergency response protocol.
Attend all meetings, workshops, and retreats.
Provide quality customer service to all staff and customers.
Maintain a positive work environment though interaction with staff, peers, and superiors.
Demonstrate understanding of effective and efficient resource management.
Demonstrate understanding and competency of specific technological resources used by staff area.
Specific Requirements
Serve as primary student staff representative for the personal training and wellness program.
Serve on various campus committees, attend campus health fairs and campus events to market the personal training and wellness program.
Collaborate with various campus entities involved with campus health and wellness.
Attend various ASI staff meetings to educate staff and promote the wellness programs.
Develop, implement, and manage quarterly wellness and fitness outreach events.
Develop assessment plan and learning outcomes for various wellness and fitness events.
Maintain and compile program specific usage statistics to include in monthly reports.
Participate in leadership development training with immediate supervisor and student manager leadership team.
Process service requests and communicate event notification to staff areas that may be impacted by events.
Inventory equipment and determine equipment purchasing needs for the personal training and wellness program.
Complete quarterly and annual reports for the personal training and wellness program.
Prepare presentations as necessary.
Maintain familiarity with evacuation plan for work area.
Maintain prompt work hours and follow absence procedures.

Other Duties and Responsibilities
The person holding this position is considered a "mandated reporter" under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in ASI policy as a condition of their employment.
Other duties as assigned.
Period of Employment
Student managers must commit to a minimum of 9 weeks of employment over summer quarter.
Employment with this organization is of an "at will" nature, which means that the employee may resign at any time and ASI may discharge the employee at any time with or without cause.
Compensation and Hours
Pay Rate: $16.00 per hour; maximum 20 hours per week while attending academic classes. Maximum 40 hours per week when not attending academic classes.
