GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Education Specialist provides training, modeling and curriculum support to ensure that Head Start and Early Head Start classrooms are meeting the highest level of quality.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Visit HS/EHS classrooms at assigned centers daily to conduct coaching sessions that includeon-site modeling and teacher observations of appropriate early educational practices andactivities using the Practice Based Coaching framework model.
  2. Model, demonstrate and observe Infant, Toddler and Pre-K CLASS dimensions duringclassroom visits.
  3. Model best practices and strategies in all domains of the Head Start Child OutcomesFramework.
  4. Implement the Practice Based Coaching framework model with fidelity.
  5. Develop and provide trainings, as needed, on topics related to early childhood education anddevelopment including CLASS, Conscious Discipline, Creative Curriculum and TeachingStrategies Gold.
  6. Establish mentoring relationships with teachers that will result in further improvement ofdevelopmentally appropriate teaching skills.
  7. Assist teachers in developing curriculum activities, lesson plans, and routines that producepositive school readiness outcomes for children.
  8. Observe teachers and use reflective feedback strategies to improve their performance.
  9. Assist in creating literacy-rich, developmentally appropriate, engaging learning environmentsin assigned centers. Model and monitor the use of Word Wall activities.
  10. Assist the Center Manager and teaching staff, as needed.
  11. Communicates both in writing and verbally with teacher and Center Manager about thestatus of teachers and classrooms weekly.
  12. Develops and creates engaging education training presentations to deliver to large groupaudiences including teachers, parents, and other staff.
  13. Assist teachers in collecting and analyzing assessment data to develop lesson plans andactivities to support children's growth and development.
  14. Assist and help provide strategies to support identified behavior concerns.
  15. Monitor child portfolios and lesson plans to ensure compliance, timeliness, and quality.
  16. Assist in the evaluation of classrooms using CLASS, ITERS, ECERS, and other classroommonitoring tools.
  17. Execute Teacher Action Plans developed though the assessment process.
  18. Attend required workshops and in-service trainings and keep informed of current trends andnew professional techniques through participating in professional workshops, conferencesand seminars and by reading professional journals and publications, training andworkshops/conferences related to early childhood development to increase knowledge of best practices.
  19. Advocate on behalf of Episcopal Children's Services Head Start/ Early Head Start and childrenand families involved in the program.

  • This position reports to the Education Manager
 
Position Requirements

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • A baccalaureate or advanced degree in Early Childhood Education
  • A baccalaureate or advanced degree in education that includes ages K through 6, with 15 credit hours in early childhood education courses, and at least 480 hours experience teaching preschool-age children
  • A baccalaureate or advanced degree in any field with 45 credit hours in early childhood education courses, with at least 480 hours of early education teaching experience
  • Classroom experience required
  • ESOL certification or coursework preferred; CLASS experience & certification preferred

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of current practices in early childhood education with an emphasis in teacher-child interactions and using curriculum and assessments to plan and individualize
  • Knowledge of ECS Coaching model
  • Ability to articulate and model best teaching instructional strategies and practices.
  • Ability to motivate teachers to high levels of commitment and performance
  • Establish a relationship of mutual trust and respect with support staff, site coordinators and teaching staff
  • Ability to perform with little direct supervision
  • Knowledge of applicable safety and abuse-reporting procedures
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office products at an intermediate to advanced level
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Ability to maintain confidential information
  • Ability to plan and organize work as well as maintain records, analyze data and prepare reports
  • Ability to present in front of large group audiences

LICENSES, CERTIFICATION OR REGISTRATIONS:

  • Valid driver’s license and proof of automobile coverage
  • Satisfactory Driving Record (as outlined in Vehicle Driving Policy)
  • CLASS and TSGold certification in Infant, Toddler & Preschool within 60 days of employment
  • By October 2019, must have current First Aid and Pediatric Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training
  • Complete a minimum of 15 hours of in-service training annually, July 1- June 30

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

  • Works in early childhood classroom settings
  • Ability to lead large group trainings
  • Travel to multiple sites is required
  • Some nights and weekends for special events and training may be required

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL SKILLS:

  • Acceptable eyesight (with or without correction)
  • Acceptable hearing (with or without correction)
  • Ability to communicate both orally and in writing
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
