The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures furthers the understanding, celebration, and preservation of cinema through inclusive and accessible exhibitions, screenings, programs, initiatives, and collections. Welcoming visitors from Los Angeles and around the world, the Museum works in active partnership with motion picture artists and specialists, scholars, staff, and diverse communities to contextualize and challenge dominant narratives around cinema, inspiring discourse, connection, joy, and discovery.

Reporting to the Director of Education and Engagement and supporting the Manager of Public Programs, the Public Programs Specialist will develop and implement different types of public programs including lectures, panels, and conversations using digital and in-person formats to engage visitors. The position is seeking an energetic, responsible, and experienced individual to execute multiple in-person and virtual programs per month to fulfill the goal of serving a multitude of visitors each year. Strong knowledge and experience working in film history, event production (digital and in-person), and project management is needed along with exceptional written and oral communication skills.

 

You Will:

  • Conceptualize, develop, and execute exhibition and collection-related public programs, including lectures, panels, and conversations.
  • Assist in the development and planning of a dynamic roster of programs while in dialogue with long-term and temporary exhibitions as well as the Academy Museum’s permanent collection.
  • Apply video production skills to create hybridized digital and in-person versions of public programs.
  • Research film history to be used for the development of public programs.
  • Contact presenters, performers, other stake holders about programs; produces correspondence, contracts, and travel itineraries; maintains program files; and coordinate other administrative duties as needed.
  • Establish and maintain filing systems, records, and attendance data for public programs.
  • Analyze and maintain records to improve public program offerings.
  • Ensure wide accessibility for programs via accommodations.
 
Position Requirements

You Have:

  • BA degree in, education, film studies, art history, museum studies, or related field required.
  • 3+ years of experience creating and implementing successful public programming for a variety of audiences.
  • Knowledge of a broad range of periods and styles of film.
  • Excellent public speaking, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple programs for multiple audiences concurrently.
  • Proven track record of creating mission-driven programming that aligns audience needs with collections and exhibitions.
  • Experience cultivating high-profile speakers.
  • Creative thinker with outstanding customer service skills.
  • Strong research, writing, and communication skills.
  • A team player with an ability to work with a variety of contractors, artists, and staff.
  • Flexibility in schedule to accommodate evening and weekend programs.
