Empathy Collaborative Manager

This position is responsible for overseeing the operational activities for the grant-funded Empathy Collaborative project.  The Empathy Collaborative project will conduct internal and external asset mapping, build a sustainable partnership with communities who have historically been underserved by the zoo, and co-create empathy-informed programming that is relevant to our community partners. 

This is a limited duration, grant funded position currently funded through December 31, 2023.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversee operations for the Empathy Collaborative community-building project. 
  • Liaison between internal zoo and community stakeholders, Antioch University’s Urban Environmental Education staff, and AmeriCorps volunteers.
  • Under direction of the Impact Director, communicate strategic program goals to zoo leadership.
  • Develop cultural competency trainings for zoo staff, collaborating with external contractors and the People & Culture department.
  • Collaborate with community partners and internal zoo staff to design and implement relevant programming.
  • Work with the empathy team to integrate empathy and community-based programming and opportunities throughout projects in the Learning & Innovation department. 
  • Formalize key learnings over the course of the process to create sustainable community partnerships beyond the grant ending in 2023. 
  • Work with the Impact Director and Empathy Project Manager to meet current mission and funding goals. 
  • Facilitate project and program assessments with the evaluation teams. 
  • Develop staff work plans, conduct annual staff evaluations, and effectively coach/mentor employees.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree (B.S. or B.A.) from an accredited college or university and six (6) or more years of related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.  
  • Four (4) or more years’ of supervisory experience with increasing responsibilities in project management. 
  • Demonstrated experience with community building, community-driven outcomes, campaign organizing, and/or co-created theory and practice.
  • Knowledge of community development issues and experience working in diverse communities including multiple generations (seniors, youth, working adults), as well as across ethnic and racial communities. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively and comfortably with audiences of different backgrounds and experiences. 
  • Comfortable with change, innovation, and creative approaches to collaboration and evaluation.
  • Excellent project management skills that include attention to detail, organizational skills, flexible and responsive ability to prioritize workload and schedules in a fast-paced environment with multiple agendas. 
  • Open to experimentation, learning, and adjustments along the way.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.  Ability to lead and motivate teams, bring in and support different perspectives and to work with diverse populations and a variety of stakeholders (partners, network committee members, staff, donors, board members, volunteers, visitors, etc.).
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team setting.
  • Proficient and experienced in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Must be able to work with customized databases and technology, and communicate effectively via web platforms.
  • Ability to interview, hire, and train employees; plan, assign, and direct work; appraise performance; reward and discipline employees.
  • Ability to evaluate problems and solve them in a timely manner; respond to concerns with empathy and inclusivity.
  • Ability provide helpful, behaviorally specific feedback to others and engage in open and honest communication. 
  • Ability to adapt communication based on audience and purpose with inclusivity.  Ability to disseminate information effectively to appropriate levels. 
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, which may include weekends, evenings, and holidays.

PREFERRED SKILLS

  • Graduate degree in relevant field.
  • Experience in cross-cultural competencies.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • This position may occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds while handling, lifting, and storing supplies.
  • Reasonable accommodations may be made to perform essential functions.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to a typical office environment and/or outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.  While under COVID-19 restrictions this position may work mostly remote.   When travel restrictions are lifted, job may include travel to the partner sites in WA, AK, ID, ND, MN, WI, and MT.

Pay: $75,000/annually plus benefits
