POSITION SUMMARY
The Lead Clinical Nurse organizes, directs and reviews work, administers personnel matters, establishes and maintains logistical systems and provides direct patient care. This position provides leadership, direction and technical expertise in the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of delivery of nursing services in order to maintain continuity of comprehensive care in the clinic. The incumbent will be assigned to a shift that includes nights, weekends, and/or holidays.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Responsible for providing direct observation of patients as directed by the nursing plan of care and under the supervision of the nursing staff and/or nursing department supervisor. Responsible for assisting nursing staff to create, maintain and provide a safe environment.
- Developing individualized patient care plans and participates in patient care planning which involves the assessment and evaluation of patient needs, periodic evaluation of plans to insure that intended results are being achieved.
- Interviewing patients and family members; consults and coordinates with providers and other members of the health care team to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care plans carries out treatments and procedures per scope of practice. Provides counseling and education to patients and families or surrogates on preventive, curative and rehabilitative measures related to their health care needs. Serve as patient advocate by supporting the basic rights, values and beliefs of the patient.
- Maintaining health records by documenting observations, nursing interventions and therapeutic measures administered in an accurate, efficient and timely manner, in the appropriate format and appropriate forms.
- Recognizing adverse signs and symptoms, which are not always apparent, and to respond promptly in emergency situations including the implementation of life saving procedures.
- Participating in the development, implementation and evaluation of standards of care, Quality Assurance and Infection Control activities. Contribute to positive working relationships within ACU and other departments in the hospital.
- Communicates all pertinent clinic issues to the SCN and ASCN of the department or designee on a daily basis. Assists with planning, organizing, directing, and evaluating a comprehensive nursing staff development, education and performance improvement program for the clinic.
- Promotes leadership, guidance, professionalism, and evaluation to the nursing paraprofessional staff. Assures staff and self are in compliance with accreditation standards and accrediting requirements (e.g., The Joint Commission, CMS, and HIPAA).
- Maintains equipment, supply purchases, travel, training, and other first line supervisory issues.
- Responsible for planning work of the unit that includes completion of work schedules, adjusting work schedules as needed to meet staffing and patient care needs. Evaluates daily operations and services provided, and works collaboratively with medical staff to assure efficient use of resources, including patient flow, work flow, productivity, and takes appropriate corrective and evaluative action(s).
- Approves and denies staffs leave, recommends promotions, reassignments, performance awards, and disciplinary actions for employees. Assists in performance appraisals for nursing staff. Resolves informal complaints of employees and refers those beyond unit level to higher management.
- In collaboration with the medical staff, develops and implements plans and programs for the improvement or revision of present programs and services to meet the changing needs of the patient population.
- Provides recommendations relative to performance improvement and infection control initiatives.
- Conducts staff meetings for clinic support personnel to include in-services and training as needed.
- Submits monthly statistical reports, maintains clinic Quality Assurance standards for all point of care testing and clinic refrigerator temperature logs.
- Fosters a collaborative environment, using a team approach, in which ideas are shared and valued to promote safe, patient centered care.
- Responsible for electronic health records data entry pertinent to patient service role.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Physical:
Work requires walking, long periods of standing, and bending. Agility and the ability to lift, pull and bend are required to move patients to and from beds, wheelchairs, stretchers, et cetera, and in moving equipment and medical supplies up to 50 lbs.
Mental:
Contacts often require tact and sensitivity as those related to stressful situation such as death, dying, and catastrophic illnesses. Must be able to prioritize and use good judgment. Incumbent must be able to coordinate a variety of issues while being frequently interrupted.
