TITLE: Fleet Mechanic I

GENERAL SUMMARY: 

Under the general supervision of the Facilities and Fleet Maintenance Manager, and under the guidance of the Fleet Service Coordinator, performs highly skilled service, diagnostic mechanical and repair work on BATA buses, vans and related service vehicles.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

Mechanics are responsible for inspection, preventive maintenance and repair of gas, diesel,  propane and potentially other renewable energy vehicles. Duties include running diagnostic tests on vehicles, test driving vehicles to gauge performance, identifying worn and damaged parts and maintaining detailed records of the vehicles they have serviced.

Work in a team-based, collaborative environment always providing a substantive level of excellent customer service.

Mechanics are required to maintain their State or ASE certifications relevant to their job position.  

Performs necessary inspections, and routine maintenance within the guidelines of MDOT Service standards and BATA SOP’s as programmed through a Computerized Maintenance Management Software (RTA) and in collaboration with the Fleet Service Coordinator.

Manages the availability of the fleet through maintaining full knowledge of BATA service needs and applying that knowledge to bus assignments in the computer management System (BATABB)

Work orders, parts posting, detailed diagnostic and repair notations, and time management will be tracked through the use of RTA software.

Performs complex troubleshooting and diagnosis on a wide variety of vehicles with the use of electronic scan tool software.

Operates standard repair shop equipment such as welders, grinders, drill presses, band saws and a wide variety of power tools as well as a tire machine, flange tools, hydraulic porta power, hydraulic lifts, fork-lift, etc.

Keeps shop equipment operating by following operating instructions and performing preventive maintenance, troubleshooting breakdowns, maintaining condition.

Corrects vehicle deficiencies by removing, repairing, adjusting, overhauling, assembling, disassembling, and replacing major assemblies, sub-assemblies, components, parts, or systems, such as, power and drive trains, electrical, air conditioning, fuel, emission, brake, steering, hydraulics, transmissions, brake systems, electrical systems, cooling systems, and steering systems, etc.  

Maintain a clean work area, adhere to safe operating procedures.

Position Requirements

ESSENTIAL JOB ELEMENTS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS (ADA):

Physical Mobility -     Ability to walk extended distances and climb stairs and ramps to access all areas. Ability to stand for extended periods of time.  

Vision and Sight -  Ability to read instructions, directions, and similar written information in letters, memoranda, forms and other documents and operate computerized data collection and diagnostic software.

Agility/Movement -  Ability to lift, push, pull, and manipulate vehicles, tools, equipment, supplies, and other objects often weighing upwards to 100 pounds. Bending, twisting, kneeling to work in restrictive bus interiors.

Work Environment-  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, outside weather conditions, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; extreme cold; and extreme heat. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

State Certs. Individuals certified in the first 8 categories of Automobile and Light Truck repair are a Master Automobile Mechanic.

Similarly, a mechanic certified in the first 6 categories of Heavy-Duty Truck repair is a Master Heavy-Duty Truck Mechanic

A mechanic certified in less than the first 8 automobile and light truck, or less than 6 of the first heavy-duty truck repair categories is considered a Specialty Mechanic.

ASE Master Technician status is attained by passing a specified group of tests in a series. The tests needed for each test series is listed below. You must also document 2 years of relevant hands-on work experience. You must recertify in each test area every 5 years. If you let one of the required tests expire, you lose your master status. You can regain it even if you let a certification expire by taking a Recertification test. There is no time limit on returning.

High school graduation, preferably supplemented by training in electronic engine diagnostic techniques and three years experience as an auto, van, bus, truck or heavy equipment  mechanic; ability to deal with employees and the public tactfully and courteously.

SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

Class B Michigan CDL license with endorsements for air brake and passenger operation and Michigan State Mechanic Certification within thirty days of hire.
