Description

Summer can't get here fast enough! Encounter animals. Concoct experiments. Build robots. No matter what you love, every day of summer will be packed full of adventure, excitement, and opportunities to explore science and know wonder. Our camps embrace hands-on learning, where campers explore science and embrace it as a way of knowing.

The Museum of Life and Science (MLS) offers one-week, full-day, hands-on science camps for children age 4 through grade 8 that run June 7- August 20, 2021 at its campus on Murray Avenue in Durham. The MLS also offers one-week, full-day camps for children age 4 through grade 5 at the Montessori Community School, located in the Chapel Hill area.

The Summer Camp Program Facilitator supports the Museum’s mission by facilitating special learning experiences for campers that foster lifelong learning and embrace science as a way of knowing.

This position is seasonal, part-time, non-exempt, between 20-22 hours per week with required Monday-Friday availability. The Summer Camp Program Facilitator must be available for at least 11 weeks between June 5 and August 20 and a training day. 
 
 Responsibilities:

  • Lead hands-on informal 45-minute programs for all camp groups
  • Work closely with Site Directors, Camp Assistants, and full-time Museum staff to prepare and present pre-developed science programs
  • Maintain safety and well-being for up to 18 campers at a time
  • General materials management
    • Design and scheduling of individual 45 minute camp programs
    • Set up activities and clean up spaces before and after camp day
    • Monitor program supplies and request replenishments when needed
  • Facilitate afternoon or morning curbside pickup
  • Attend weekly staff meetings
  • Additional duties as assigned
 
Position Requirements

Requirements:

  • College degree in education, science, or related field, or have 2+ years equivalent experience
  • Previous experience teaching in a formal or informal education setting
  • An interest in informal science discovery
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work well under pressure with a positive attitude and creative problem-solving skills
  • Ability to communicate with and engage campers aged K-8th
  • Must be able to be on their feet for up to 6 hours at a time, walk distances of up to one mile over varying terrains, be able to lift 25 pounds
  • Ability to work outside in heat and humidity; some camps occur in an outdoor classroom and many camps spend time outdoors.

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Bi-lingual Proficiency
  • Demonstrated interest and background in natural sciences
  • Animal handling experience
  • Experience planning and leading group/team-building games
 
Shift Days  
Pay Range $12.75 per hour (non-negotiable)
