JOB SUMMARY:

Elwha Enterprises, Inc. (EEI) is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe entrusted with the management and development of various Tribal lands and business enterprises. We are seeking an applicant with the passion, skills, integrity, and commitment to develop, lead, and work as part of a team to help the Tribe meet its goals of self-sufficiency and to operate businesses that set a standard of excellence for employees, customers, partners, and investors, all under the direction of the EEI Board of Directors.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB:

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) oversees the corporation and its subsidiary entities to ensure compliance with applicable tribal, federal, and state laws and ensure profitability. The CEO works with the Board of Directors to pursue business and investment opportunities to benefit the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe and may advise the Tribe on enterprises and opportunities under the control of the Business Committee or other tribal entities.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership and management to ensure fulfillment of the company's mission and core values.
  • Foster a success-oriented, accountable environment within the company.
  • Oversee all company operations through supervision of key personnel and subsidiary managers.
  • Develop and adhere to sound business principles and develop and monitor internal controls in all activities.
  • Work closely with Board of Directors to plan, develop and implement the company's goals and objectives and to make recommendations to, and when necessary seek approvals from, the Tribe's governing body, the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribal Business Committee. Implement all directives adopted by the Board of Directors.
  • Prepare corporation and subsidiary operating and capital budgets and the corporation's annual plan for approval by the Board of Directors and submittal to the Business Committee for approval.
  • Ensure that corporation expenditures are within budget.
  • Advance Tribal economic growth with new businesses and improvements and expansions of existing businesses by developing and evaluating opportunities, making recommendations to the Board, and implementing approved projects to an on-time, within budget completion.
  • Maintain current knowledge of and keep the Board of Directors and Business Committee informed about the status of projects, new opportunities, and potential risks and liabilities.
  • Establish and maintain professional relationships and diplomatically represent the company with local, state, federal and other tribal governments and with current and prospective vendors, partners, and investors.
  • Represent the company at various agencies and committees.
  • Hire and supervise staff as necessary for the efficient operation of the company. Establish professional development plans and use best efforts to recruit, train, and retain Tribal member and other qualified employees.
  • Work effectively with Enterprise legal counsel.
  • Oversee the preparation of monthly financial reports and annual budgets. Prepare the annual plan and budget in accordance with the company's Articles of Incorporation.
  • Maintain project files, records, and databases.
  • Develop, maintain and implement policies and procedures to ensure the security and confidentiality of the company's assets, records, and business plans and compliance with applicable law.
  • Maintain familiarity and compliance with all Tribal, Federal, State, and local regulatory requirements applicable to Elwha Enterprises' activities.
  • Review contracts and proposals before submission or execution.
  • Resolve problems and issues affecting company operations and/or any of its employees. Develop and direct measures to improve effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Coordinate resources and services to maximize funding opportunities and minimize expenses.
  • Research, collect, and analyze information necessary to meet economic development and other company goals.
  • Plan the agenda for Board meetings and Shareholder meetings with the Board Chairperson.
  • Attend all required meetings with the Board of Directors, Tribal Council, and staff.
  • All other duties as necessary to the position and as assigned. Travel required.
 
Position Requirements

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A minimum of seven (7) years economic development experience, five (5) years related administrative experience, and three (3) years supervisory experience required; OR any equivalent combination of experience from which comparable knowledge, skill and abilities have been achieved. Experience in a tribal environment preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, public administration, or a related field is required, MBA preferred.
  • Business/planning experience required.
  • Demonstrated leadership and supervisory experience required.
  • Must maintain the highest degree of personal and professional integrity.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with a wide range of people of differing backgrounds, skills and knowledge levels, and a willingness to train, educate, and build up those around you.
  • Must have the ability to develop systems and procedures to facilitate accuracy and understanding.
  • Must understand basic business and know how to maximize inventory turns, profit margins, gross margins, and must be able to compartmentalize areas of the business.
  • Must have the ability to speak and write clearly, concisely and effectively.
  • Must have the ability to manage multiple businesses at the same time and establish priorities for each.
  • Must have the ability to analytically process and evaluate information to reach informed conclusions, perceive opportunities, and identify and anticipate risks.
  • Must be able to read, analyze, and interpret financial reports and legal documents.
  • Must have the ability to solve practical problems and deal with variable situations.
  • Working knowledge of modern business practices and methodologies, land use and real estate. General and broad knowledge of industries and market trends.
  • Must have working knowledge of modern office practices and procedures.
  • Ability to work independently on assigned tasks as well as to accept direction on given assignments.
  • Must have the ability to work well under pressure.
  • Must pass UA testing prior to employment and maintain compliance with Drug Free Workplace policies.
  • Must pass a Washington State Criminal Background check.
  • Valid driver’s license.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Stamina to work 40 hours per week, primarily in an office setting
  • Must be able to read handwriting
  • Must be able to deal with the stress of a busy workplace
  • Must be available for occasional evening work

As with all positions of the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe this position is Indian Preference in hiring.
