Special Note: The purpose of this position is to coordinate the national union’s and state/local affiliates’ efforts to deepen and expand the AFT’s engagement with rural members and communities.

Position Summary:

Under the supervision of the deputy director of the political department, this position will help support the AFT’s Rural Advisory Committee, build relationships with community partners and national coalitions that have rural outreach programs, and work to launch several new AFT outreach programs to revitalize rural communities and small towns. While the AFT has a long history of working with rural communities, this position will work to support, align and amplify the impact of the various rural projects. Additionally, this position will help the AFT apply best practices and key lessons learned in our outreach to rural communities.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Work with leaders to help implement the AFT’s rural agenda and support the national AFT’s and our state affiliates’ ongoing efforts to strengthen our outreach to rural communities.
  • Provide coaching, training and technical assistance to communities to develop and submit federal, state and private applications to fund local economic and community development goals.
  • Implement a system to track and assess our engagement and the engagement of organizations that invest resources to build power among working families in farm communities and small towns.
  • Adapt materials and communications to speak to and be informed by rural audiences.
  • Work with affiliate leaders and their partners to develop and implement campaigns/projects to improve outreach at the state and local levels.
  • Work with constituency divisions and other departments to ensure rural projects are connected to broader AFT campaigns and messaging. Represent the AFT at meetings and in dealings with outside organizations.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

 
Position Requirements
  • Deep commitment to the history of organizing for economic, racial and social justice, and demonstrated skill as a community, labor or political organizer.
  • Knowledge and relevant experience related to the issues rural communities are facing.
  • Existing relationships, or the ability to develop deep relationships, with organizations doing work in rural communities.
  • Knowledge of external funders in economic program development, and experience with grant writing.
  • Ability to assess and analyze complex political situations and respond appropriately.
  • Experience in developing and executing written campaign plans is essential.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills and effective interpersonal skills.
  • Understanding of the AFT and/or its affiliates is a plus.
  • Commitment to economic, social, gender, LGBTQ and racial equality.
 
Full-Time/Part-Time Full-Time  
Work Environment The work is generally performed in an office environment with remote flexibility. This position may involve extensive travel and sometimes require working non-traditional hours and weekends.
