Koniag is looking for a Shareholder or Descendant  to fill the Hospitality Apprentice position at the Kodiak Brown Bear Center for the 2021 season. This is a temporary seasonal position and will begin in July 2021.

This is your opportunity to work for Alaska’s premier bear viewing destination, the Kodiak Brown Bear Center, which offers a true Alaskan adventure and world class bear-viewing. The Kodiak Brown Bear Center is located on the southwest side of Kodiak Island in the heart of the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge, and provides exclusive guided bear viewing tours at the famous Thumb and O’Malley Rivers on Karluk Lake.


Under the supervision of the KBBC Lodge Manager/Lead Guide, the Hospitality Apprentice will learn all aspects of operating a successful remote bear viewing operation. This position will work on-site at the Kodiak Brown Bear Center (KBBC) facilities located on Camp Island on Karluk Lake on Kodiak Island. KBBC’s Hospitality Apprentice is a learning opportunity for Koniag Shareholders or Descendants.

Essential Functions, Responsibilities & Duties may include, but are not limited to:(Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.)

The Apprentice will provide support in some or all of the following areas:


  • Assist Lead Guide with bear viewing excursions, including boat preparations, stocking guest refreshments and clean-up.
  • Maintain bear viewing equipment including boots, rain gear, water bottles, bug nets, chairs, etc.
  • Maintain and prep fishing equipment as needed.
  • Maintain a clean and tidy boat.
  • Upkeep on trails as needed.


  • Assists cook with meal planning, preparations, serving, cleaning and dish washing
  • Assist with the restocking of food and other supplies
  • Learn and assist with menu planning and ordering procedures
  • Learn and assist with proper food handling
  • Assist with regular cleaning of Gathering room, bathrooms, guest cabins, entry way, laundry facilities, guest & cook cabin laundry, etc.


  • Prepare for guests’ arrival, make sure rooms are made up and ready for guests’ arrival including restocking room toiletries and coffee/tea.
  • Greet guest upon arrival, provide tour of the facilities and show guests to their cabins.


  • Support the Facilities Tech in with all grounds maintenance including lawn and outdoor activities areas.
  • Learn and assist with maintenance of Camp Island equipment- generators, hand tools, lawn mower, etc.
  • Learn and assist with operation and maintenance of on-island water system
  • Other duties may be assigned.

Position Requirements


  • Must be willing to work in a remote location for at least 30 days.
  • Must be able to regularly lift 50 lbs.
  • Must have attention to detail.
  • Must be able to perform duties in a timely manner, work unsupervised and use time efficiently.
  • Must be able to take and follow directions.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to interact with clients and other staff at all time with a pleasant and cordial manner.
  • Applicant must always possess a neat, clean and orderly appearance.

Work Experience, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Must be a minimum of 18 years of age
  • Must be detail-oriented and self-motivated.
  • 6-pack license (preferred)

Office Location and Travel:

The Apprentice will begin in Kodiak at the Koniag office and from there travel to Camp Island. While on Camp Island, lodging and food are provided by KWA. KWA maintains internet, phone, showers, power, cooking facilities and diesel heat at Camp Island.  

Working Environment & Conditions:  

The work environment is a remote site and requires incumbent to be able and willing to work in all types of weather conditions and varied temperatures.   Must be able to travel by small boats, airplanes and all-terrain vehicles.  Work will be performed both indoors and outside.  The incumbent must be able to lift, move and carry up to 40 ounds.  Noise level is low to moderate. The incumbent is required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear.  Position requires that incumbent be able to use the five senses (sight, smell, hearing, taste, and touch) and be able to distinguish colors. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and ability to adjust focus.
