Position Meter & Controls Technician  
Description

Kaukauna Utilities is hiring for a Meter & Controls Technician in Kaukauna, WI.  This skilled position is responsible for the technical support of the utility’s electric meters and operational technology systems, including the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), and integrations to other systems.

This position reports directly to the Manager of Generation and Substations; it is expected that this position will work closely across all operational departments, especially the Electric Department, in the execution of their duties. Work performed is expected to be in alignment with the departmental objectives of providing continuous quality service to customers of the utility, promoting safe working practices and conditions, and promoting the use of new and existing technologies among the operational staff.

The primary responsibilities of this position is the general oversight of the utility’s electric meters and control systems.

Duties related to the electric meters would include the following:

  • Issue inventory all new electric meters (including managing the paperwork / tracking)
  • Install and maintain all new three-phase pad-mount meter settings (transformer mounted)
  • Install and maintain all new primary metering settings (12 kV and 34.5 kV)
  • Test electric meters on a routine schedule and as needed (three-phase and single phase)
  • Respond to billing concerns (meter testing, high bill concerns, no reads, vacancies, etc.)
  • Respond to customer power quality concerns (Dranetz recorder, voltage/load histories, etc.)
  • Collaborate with Stores and Engineering to maintain meter inventory

Duties related to the control systems would include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Implementation, updating, and maintenance of SCADA system
  • Develop and maintain reports from the SCADA’s historian module
  • Develop, maintain, and troubleshoot PLC’s in hydro generation and water utility plants
  • Provide support and training to the operational staff on control systems

Provide educational training to those supervised and other utility personnel to enhance understanding of existing systems and applications of new technologies.

Establish and maintain positive relationships by providing technical support for all departments; interact with counterparts within the utility industry on matters of joint importance; share ideas and coordinate resources with other utilities as needed.

Maintain effective working relationships with vendors, the utility’s management team, and utility staff. Communicate effectively with all of the above at any technical level.

Foster an environment of safety at the work place.

Position Requirements

Required Education

  • Associate’s degree in electrical engineering technology, Journey Meter technician, Electrician or equivalent certification.

Required Experience

  • Three to five years utility experience with SCADA, electric distribution, transmission and generation technology, computer networks and systems, with commensurate experience with electric and water utility systems.

Special Knowledge

  • Knowledge of control systems used in the electric distribution, transmission, and generation fields and water distribution systems.
  • Knowledge of electric utility metering configurations and their application on a distribution system.
  • Working knowledge of computers in a Windows environment, including Office 365 and Teams.
  • Ability to read, write, and understand technical drawings and prints.

Special Skills

  • Identify equipment and material requirements and prepare specifications and/or purchase requisitions for review and approval.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others in technical matters regardless of their technical acumen.
  • Ability to work independently and to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to work from sketches and field mark-ups.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.

Physical Requirements

  • Use of fingers and both hands and legs or be compensated by the use of acceptable prostheses.
  • Good coordination and good sense of smell.
  • Clear vision in both eyes, with depth perception, field of vision, ability to distinguish basic colors and to distinguish shades of color (glasses acceptable).
  • Ability to hear conversational voice up to 15 feet away in at least one ear (aid permitted).
  • May be required to assist in the actual performance of restoration work in emergency outage situations.
