Position Summary: The deputy director is responsible for ensuring the AFT's views and policies are advanced and ensuring the availability, quality and effective use of services for healthcare members. Under the direction of the health issues director, the deputy director is responsible for managing the AFT's work in relation to national, state and local issue campaigns, and also for ensuring that work among AFT departments is aligned and consistent with the policies and programs of the AFT and the healthcare division.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Develop and assist in executing innovative strategies around healthcare policy and professional issues affecting healthcare workers, and provide consultation to affiliates regarding the same.
  • Identify and act upon opportunities to increase internal and external visibility for the AFT and its healthcare division, including but not limited to communications, development of policy and position papers.
  • Oversee and work on healthcare policy, including rule making, and engage government agencies in the administration of healthcare policy.
  • Develop and execute healthcare issue-based campaigns.
  • Assist state and local affiliates with development of concrete healthcare strategies, including capacity building in all areas of union activity.
  • Coordinate work with other AFT staff and departments to ensure healthcare agenda is developed, facilitated and implemented effectively for state and local affiliates.
  • Represent the AFT at events and meetings hosted by affiliates and outside organizations.
  • Provide support for the union's priorities of member mobilization, developing activists, building strong local unions, community engagement and electing pro-worker candidates.
  • Manage staff, as assigned.
  • Other duties, as assigned.

 
Position Requirements
  • Substantial experience in the labor movement and/or nonprofit associations.
  • Substantial experience running comprehensive campaigns. Successful applicant should possess exceptional strategic and tactical expertise.
  • Practical understanding of healthcare policy, law and finance; with detailed knowledge of healthcare industry and professional issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage priorities and programs. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the capacity to work well with a diverse range of individuals with strong viewpoints.
  • Excellent analytical skills and a high level of proficiency in writing and oral communications, with the ability to clearly represent the views of the AFT’s nurse and health professional leaders.
  • Demonstrated success in managing staff and coordinating multi-stakeholder projects. Ability to work in a professional and collegial manner.
  • A working knowledge of AFT structure, policy and goals. Experience with the AFT at the national, state and local levels is preferred.
  • Familiarity with the AFT organizing model is desirable.
  • Specific knowledge of the American Federation of Teachers is a plus.
  • Experience and demonstrated success in developing, conducting and managing a broad range of private sector hospital and healthcare union campaigns among a variety of settings and occupations is a plus.
 
Full-Time/Part-Time Full-Time  
Work Environment Work is generally performed in an office environment but provides remote flexibility. The ability to travel is required.
