The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures advances the understanding, celebration, and preservation of cinema through inclusive and accessible exhibitions, screenings, programs, initiatives, and collections. Welcoming visitors from Los Angeles and around the world, the museum works in active partnership with motion picture artists and specialists, scholars, staff, and diverse communities to contextualize and challenge dominant narratives around cinema, inspiring discourse, connection, joy, and discovery.

The department of Marketing and Communications at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures is looking for an experienced Writer/Editor to conceptualize, research, and write media for different formats and platforms such as blog content, website, advancement materials, press releases and newsletters. The writer will work with project team to create and edit engaging, and interpretive content, to support the Museum's collection, exhibitions, marketing, communications and related activities. Assignments typically involve: consulting with curatorial and education staff, conducting background research, leading recorded audio interviews with curators and artists, and working with staff to review drafts and media edits. You should be a strong conceptual thinker and an accomplished writer, editor, and interviewer.

You Will:

  • Actively participate in discovery meetings and content planning sessions with curators and other content experts.
  • Conduct background research on subject areas, contribute to project documentation including discovery reports and develop content plans.
  • Conduct interviews and write compelling content.
  • Act as a story lead within projects to provide content guidance to project managers and the internal team.
  • Work closely with the project manager, creative lead, and technical lead to ensure the content, creative, and media combine for an engaging user experience.
  • Integrate final content into CMS systems.
  • Provide quality assurance testing of completed media.
  • Archive final pieces and media into digital assets management systems.
 
Position Requirements

You Have:

  • Bachelor's degree in English literature, Creative Writing, Art History, Journalism, or Communications required. Graduate degree preferred.
  • 2+ years of experience writing, researching, and editing in a journalism or arts environment.
  • A portfolio of sample writing for museums, news organization, science centers, exhibitions, or cultural publications.
  • Experience writing for a variety of media, including audio, video, online, mobile, print, and interactive.
  • Capability to distill and succinctly convey relevant points of information from a variety of resources.
  • Ability to work effectively and diplomatically with a variety of people within and outside the Museum.
  • An understanding of the importance and value of openness and accountability.
  • Commitment to working with people from diverse backgrounds.
