Share Email Opening Title Counsellor - Transitional Housing Support Worker  Full-Time/Part-Time Part-Time   Status 0.5 FTE (17.5 hrs/week)   Category Counselling   Open Date 1/6/2021   Close Date 1/18/2021   Description The Counsellor – Transitional Housing Support Worker provides case management and crisis intervention, information, advocacy and referral, in both English and French, for women involved in abusive situations. The Counsellor – Transitional Housing Support Worker also participates in the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of programs and services for individuals, families and the community. Program-Related Activities Performs intake and risk assessments, supportive counselling, case management and crisis intervention functions Provides information and referrals for women living in abusive situations, who have recently left an abusive situation, or who are in transition. Offer personal and practical support, information and advocacy in regards to services such as housing, legal, educational, job training, parenting, and health and wellness services and shelters. Provide crisis intervention services both over the telephone and in person. Ensure the development of and facilitates or co-facilitates groups for target population, as necessary. Acts as a client advocate on individual and systemic issues. Contributes to chart documentation, participates in chart reviews and case conferences, and makes referrals. Participates in the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of treatment, education, counselling and health promotion programs and services for individuals, families and the community. Acts as a consultant on resources for other service providers in the Centre and in the community. Liaises and collaborates with staff and other community service providers as appropriate to provide service and make referrals Ensures accountability by providing statistics and reports of activities, as required, and keeps client records, as required, within the safeguard of confidentiality. Participates in the selection, orientation and supervision of volunteers as applies to program related activities. Participates in the selection, orientation, training and supervision of students in practicum placements as required.   Position Requirements Education Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university in a relevant discipline or equivalent combination of some post-secondary education and significant experience in counselling. Professional experience Three to five years full-time relevant experience in a community setting. Experience in providing community-based mental health and counselling services including crisis intervention, group work, referral, and advocacy. Experience with counselling techniques such as cognitive behavioral therapy, narrative therapy, feminist therapy, motivational interviewing or solution-focused therapy and strength based practices preferred. Experience in group education and knowledge of adult learning principles and experience in facilitating groups. Experience and interest in working with marginalized and diverse clientele, such as low-income, high-needs, newcomer, and a variety of multicultural communities. Experience in health promotion including community development. Experience in program development, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation. Experience in a non-profit, community-based organization. Key Competencies Strong knowledge of Feminist anti-racist, anti-oppression philosophy Thorough knowledge of and proficiency in current assessment and intervention techniques. Experience working with women who have experienced abuse. Knowledge of woman abuse and its effects on women and children. Thorough knowledge and understanding of community resources and community-based health care, as well as low-income and housing legislation. Knowledge of the Carlington client service area. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, oral and written. Demonstrated ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team environment. Knowledge of and experience with group dynamics and group facilitation approaches Demonstrated proficiency in the use of computers and various software applications, including Microsoft Office programs, client database software, and electronic record keeping in a client services setting. Linguistic Profile This position falls within Carlington CHC’s designation under the French Language Services Act of Ontario. Fluency in English is required. Fluency in French is required at Level (Advanced +) for oral expression/comprehension and Level (Intermediate +) for written expression.
