GENERAL PURPOSE OF POSITION:

To oversee the operation of Financial Services of the United Church of Christ Board, and to serve as Treasurer of the UCCB, the covenanted ministries, and other certain affiliated entities combined per US generally accepted accounting principles. The CFO is responsible for directing the fiscal functions of the organization in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles issued by the Financial Accounting Standards Board, and other regulatory and advisory organizations in accordance with financial management techniques and best practices. The CFO will also have responsibility for overseeing the areas of property management & insurance, information technology and building services.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversee the overall operation and supervision of Financial Services, including assuring that monthly financial reports, wire transfers and check authorizations are completed accurately, timely and in accordance with relevant policies and procedures.
  • Review monthly financial reports and report regularly to the Officers of the Church on the financial health of the covenanted ministries, the United Church of Christ Board and Certain Affiliated Entities (as defined by US GAAP), and make recommendations to ensure responsible and sound budget, spending, and investment practices.
  • Serve as the Treasurer of the United Church of Christ Board and Certain Affiliated Entities.
  • Review contracts under consideration and assess their financial implications, as needed.
  • Review budgets for major events to ensure consistency with overall financial resources and priorities.
  • Develop/Recommend and administer standardized fiscal policies and procedures as presented to and approved by the Boards of Directors.
  • Supervise the Controllers. Provide financial resource support to Executive Ministers and at meetings representing Financial Services as requested.
  • Provide staff support to the Finance & Budget Committee, Audit Committee and the Investment & Endowment Committee of the United Church of Christ Board and Certain Affiliated Entities.
  • Prepare and present financial reports for General Synod.
  • Compile and report Biennial Budget for General Synod, work with ministries on timely and accurate reports for the Annual Report.
  • Remain current on accounting methodology and financial information systems technology.
  • Maintain banking relationships including arranging for lines of credit/other borrowing, depositories for funds and temporarily investing funds for the UCCB.
  • Oversee and Coordinate the annual UCCB Audit, including compilation of the Audit Report and other analysis as required.
  • Maintain custody of any United Church of Christ Board investments held in physical form for the Covenanted Ministries.
  • Recommend the contract for services for annual audit to the Audit Committee of the UCCB, and contract payroll services and other accounting services as needed.
  • Serve as a member of designated staff groups including Mission Planning Council and the Senior Leadership Team.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned by the General Minister and President as needed and appropriate.

  • Overall supervision and oversight of staff in Financial Services, IT, and Building Services, include direct supervision of the
    • Controller
    • Assistant Controller
    • Assistant Controller of the Church Building and Loan Fund
    • 700 Prospect Building Supervisor
    • Outsource IT Network Administrator
 
Position Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and/or abilities required to perform successfully in this position.

  • A bachelor’s degree in accounting or business administration is required; preference will be given to candidates with an MBA or CPA credentials, and experience in church or not-for-profit financial management.
  • Knowledge of the ethical standards of a CPA; maintains confidentiality, credibility, ethical, full disclosure and clean financial history, unimpeachable integrity, exceptional judgment, fairness, and trustworthiness
  • Financial acumen, well-grounded in accounting and administration
  • Extensive managerial experience in a culturally diverse work setting a plus
  • Desire and sensitivity to work in diverse racial, ethnic, cultural and religious settings with commitment to pluralism in the workplace as well as in one understands of mission.
  • Ability to work in team settings, using supervisory and conflict management skill
  • Flexibility in managing multiple projects and meeting deadlines
  • Collegiality, fostering climate of respect for diversity
  • Ability to communicate effectively with Church leaders, auditors, bankers and legal counsel
  • Computer systems skills, in particular: spreadsheet (Excel), and the Office 365 suite and Blackbaud’s Financial Edge NXT and Raiser’s Edge NXT.
  • Knowledge of the United Church of Christ Board

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Active CPA status preferred.

 

OTHER:

This position is based in Cleveland, OH and will be temporarily a work from home hybrid (part days in office and part days at home)
