Turning Point Community Programs is hiring a Peer Support Specialist for the Nevada County Drug Court to work out of the Nevada County Probation office. Turning Point Community Programs (TPCP) provides integrated, cost-effective mental health services, employment and housing for adults, children and their families that promote recovery, independence and self-sufficiency. GENERAL PURPOSE

Under the administrative supervision of the Program Director, this position is responsible for providing psychosocial, rehabilitation, and recovery-oriented services for adults.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is an at-will direct service position within a program. The position will utilize lived experience perspectives and training to support participants in the Adult Drug Court. The Peer Support Specialist will provide an avenue for active listening and provide messages of hope and recovery.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES – (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)

  • Supports and teaches the use of recovery tools and principles
  • Models personal responsibility, self-advocacy and hopefulness
  • In partnership with each client, assesses their hopes, strengths, accomplishments and challenges in order to support client’s stated goals and recovery plan
  • Responsible for supporting participants in wellness activities
  • Provides “on-the-spot” support that is both helpful to the members and consistent with the philosophy of the program
  • Coaches clients in developing age-appropriate social skills, money management, personal hygiene, and job readiness
  • Completes paperwork as assigned in a timely manner, and maintains productivity standards outlined for the program
  • Responsible for completing/facilitating items on the health and housekeeping log
  • Attends to the safety, health, and wellbeing of clients
  • Participate in Team Meetings and Peer Reflection as required unless excused by the Program Director
  • Support clients in developing reciprocal relationships and natural support systems to strengthen self-sufficiency
  • Encourages the philosophy of empowerment and participates in a mutual learning approach
  • Meets the standard for consistent attendance, not more than a 5% absence rate per month
  • Adheres to and enforces the policies and procedures of Turning Point Community Programs

Knowledge Of:

  • Principles and goals of community mental health.
  • Principles and goals of the “self-help model.”
  • Principles and goals of the “consumer-driven model.”
  • Principles and goals of the “harm reduction model.”
  • Principles, techniques and trends in counseling, psychotherapy, clinical case management, and various treatment modalities.
  • Psychosocial rehabilitation’s treatment and programming.

Ability To:

  • Work and communicate with staff, clients, families, community agencies and Professionals.
  • Perform crisis intervention strategies.
  • Work effectively under stress and conflict.
  • Exercise appropriate judgment and decision-making.
  • Be flexible and adaptable in any given situation. 
  • Work as a member of a team.
  • Work under time deadlines and pressures.
  • Work with minimal supervision.

Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:30 am - 5:00 pm

 
Position Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS & LICENSES

Education, Training and Experience:

A typical way of obtaining the knowledge, skills and abilities outlined above is through graduation from High School or obtainment of a GED and two (2) years full time/equivalent (FTE) direct care experience in a behavioral health related field providing direct care services; and a certificate of completion form the Core Skills Training after hire. Associate of Arts Degree Preferred.

Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements:

  • California driver’s license & current vehicle insurance/registration if driving; and,
  • Reliable means of transportation capable of passing vehicle safety inspection if more than five years old excluding all modes of two-wheeled transport inclusive of bicycles, mopeds and motorcycles
