Want to help people see wildlife in a whole new way? Come join our Exhibits Team as a Metal Fabricator! We have one full-time regular, benefitted position available. 

This journey-level class position performs and leads other workers in the fabrication and maintenance of vehicles, equipment, machinery and buildings. The Metal Fabricator works on zoo grounds, away from direct supervision. The Metal Fabricator has no supervisory responsibilities.

What you’ll do:

  • Repairs or replaces steel storm drains, water lines and piping for boilers and plumbing.
  • Welds materials using arc, carbon arc, metallic inert gas, tungsten inert gas and oxygen acetylene processes on a variety of both ferrous and non-ferrous metals.
  • Fabricates and repairs truck booms, brackets, frames, pump installations, tanks, panels, tools, shafts and related mechanical equipment.
  • Interprets drawings and specifications and lays out work; marks dimensions, angles and cutouts on metal plates and pipe.
  • Shapes, punches, drills and secures metal parts, cages, steel decks, trusses, machinery foundations, brackets and hand and guardrails.
  • May prepare preliminary cost estimates of materials and labor for specific tasks.
  • Designs, lays out and fabricates a variety of sheet metal ducts, guards, doors and flashings for items such as heating/ventilating/air conditioning systems, machinery, cages, buildings and roofs.
  • Coordinates work activities with other skilled trades depending on work task.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Who you are and what you bring:

  • You are a hard worker who thrives in a team environment.
  • Think "outside the box" to find creative solutions to unique requests.
  • You have a journey-level status in structural iron, sheet metal or metal fabrication, lay outs, repair, welding or burning or four years as a metal trades helper under a metal trades journey worker (or a combination of education and/or apprentice training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class).
  • You have a valid WA driver’s license with a safe driving history.
  • You are able to interpret drawings and specifications and lay out work using blueprints, schematics and manuals.
  • You are comfortable working in various indoor and outdoor environments.
  • You know about metal working, advanced knowledge of construction and maintenance of a variety of machines.
  • You have basic computer skills and can access email and use online timesheet software.
  • You have good communication skills and can share facts and ideas through writing and speech.
  • You have an understanding of and ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

Physical Demands & Work Environment

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • Regularly stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, and reach.
  • Frequently exposed to variable weather conditions.
  • Required to work in high, precarious places such as ladders and scaffolds as well as cramped spaces.
  • Occasional exposure to fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud.

Pay: $33.66 per hour, plus benefits.
