Purpose of Division:

The National Initiatives Division is responsible for developing, testing, and managing innovative national programs and services designed in support of the approximately 240 NeighborWorks Organizations with the overall objective of sustaining a network of excellence that creates opportunities for people to live in affordable homes, improve their lives and strengthen their communities. In addition, the division oversees grant opportunities for and beyond the NeighborWorks network, including other nonprofit and governmental agencies throughout the country. The major programmatic areas of focus within National Initiatives include real estate development and asset management, homeownership programs and lending, and community initiatives.

Within the National Initiatives Division, the Community Initiatives Department supports efforts to build vibrant local communities that provide equitable opportunities for people to thrive. Community Initiatives is comprised of NeighborWorks America’s Community Building and Engagement, Rural, Healthy Homes and Communities and Shared Equity Housing Initiatives. The Department supports (1) place-based community stabilization strategies aimed at creating a strong and balanced real estate market, safe and attractive conditions, and a positive neighborhood image; (2) community building and engagement strategies aimed at building resident leadership, collective capacity and social connections; and (3) systems-level strategies that bring together community stakeholders to address complex challenges. Community Initiatives accomplishes this vision through grant making, technical assistance, peer-to-peer learning, demonstration projects, trainings and workshops, research, sharing best practices, and convening practitioners and experts.

 

Position Summary:

In promoting comprehensive community development, NeighborWorks relies on the strength and on-the-ground experience of our network, comprised of more than 240 high-impact community development and housing organizations across the country, to ensure that we are providing the tools and resources required to drive strategic innovation and implementation. Network learning opportunities offer impactful forums and tools that help to convene our network, disseminate promising tools and models and promote peer exchange. These opportunities are among the best tools that we have to harness the expertise and power of our Network and create the space for field building, cross-sector collaboration, learning, and innovation in order to drive toward impactful solutions.

Working under the supervision of the Director, Community Initiatives, the Manager of Network Learning will help to plan, promote, and coordinate a range of network learning activities across the Community Initiatives team in support of topics related to neighborhood revitalization, community building and engagement, health, rural development and shared equity. Activities may include but are not limited to cohort-based learning communities, peer-to-peer site visits and webinars. The Manager also contributes to the planning of annual Community Initiatives membership meetings and other network events to ensure robust peer exchange is integrated into the programming. Following these opportunities, the Manager will produce and share written summaries and publications that highlight key lessons or takeaways. The Manager will also contribute to regular communications resources (e.g. email updates, resources lists, news updates and internal website pages) that highlight recent innovations in the comprehensive community development field.

Preference is for Washington, DC; consideration will be given for NeighborWorks regional office locations (Atlanta, Boston, New York, Kansas City, Denver or Los Angeles) or remote status.

 

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Plan, promote and coordinate a range of network learning activities across Community Initiatives in support of topics related to neighborhood revitalization, community building and engagement, health, rural development and shared equity. Network learning activities will include design, planning and implementation support of membership meetings, webinars, cohort-based learning communities, and peer-to-peer site visit programs.
  • Assist in the development of and coordinate regular updates to member and partner lists in order to ensure broad dissemination of upcoming activities, opportunities, and outcomes to increase visibility of network learning programming/events and outcomes.
  • Coordinate communication and promotion of network learning activities to maximize cross-team coordination and collaboration to facilitate strong and meaningful network engagement.
  • Support both virtual and in-person event planning and implementation related to Community Initiatives events to ensure robust peer exchange is integrated into the agendas and supported during sessions.
  • Assist in the development of case studies and tools documenting goals and outcomes related to network learning programming/events to promote innovations and promising models in the comprehensive community development field.
  • Keep up to date on best practices, techniques and standards for peer exchange to ensure that network learning opportunities are engaging and impactful.
  • Other job-related duties as required to advance the goals and objectives of the Community Initiatives, NeighborWorks America, and the NeighborWorks network.

Nature of Work Contacts:
The Manager, Network Learning will interact with a diverse group of internal staff, representatives from the NeighborWorks Network, consultants, external partners, funders, and other stakeholders from within and outside NeighborWorks America.

Fiscal Responsibilities:
The Manager, Network Learning will be responsible for managing project budgets.

 
Position Requirements

Required Minimum Qualifications:

(a) Education: Bachelor’s degree in urban planning, public policy, real estate development, nonprofit management, business administration, or other related fields. Relevant experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.

(b) Experience: At least five years of professional experience or equivalent combination of educations, training and experience which provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities (see below).

(c) Licenses, Certifications: None specified


(d) Competencies, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Passion for and dedication to supporting place-based and resident-led community development efforts.
  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Knowledge of and experience with comprehensive community development models that focus on people, place and systems and work across sectors to address multiple factors that shape people’s lives.
  • Demonstrated experience in project management, membership relations, and designing and directing technical assistance and training efforts.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and delivering presentations, including delivering presentations through online platforms (e.g. Zoom, WebEx or other virtual programs).
  • Strong writing skills, including experience developing and contributing to publications and online content.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • Experience managing contractors or consultants.
  • Ability to prioritize, plan, organize and carry out multiple assignments in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Ability to maintain regular and timely attendance.

Preferred Qualifications:
An undergraduate degree in leadership, public policy, urban planning, nonprofit management or related fields is preferred.
