Job Title: Registered Nurse

Department: Health and Human Services

Status: Non-Exempt/Full-time

Position Summary:

Under general supervision, provides comprehensive, professional nursing services to clients according to established policies, procedures, protocol and client needs.

The work is normally reviewed upon completion, with occasional spot checks while in process, to ensure accuracy, timeliness and conformance to established standards; major work tasks are covered by instructions or procedures and unusual situations are referred to a supervisor.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides professional nursing care to clients.
  • Attends weekly morning rounds at Sells Service Unit, and as needed.
  • Implements individualized treatment plans/Plan of Care.
  • Monitors and follows up on clients in the Sells Service Unit, inpatient unit or other area hospitals.
  • Provides on-call telephone services/responds to clients in a timely manner.
  • Completes an initial evaluation/assessment on all clients.  Identifies discharge planning needs.
  • Documents all client encounters in a timely manner.
  • Administers medicines (i.e., PO (Oral), IM (Intramuscular), SQ (Subcutaneous), etc.) according to what has been prescribed by the Physician.
  • Assists clients in medication management and monitoring (i.e., insulin and medication box setup).
  • Proper management of wound care by treating and monitoring wounds that are a result of disease, injury, or medical treatments following Physician orders.
  • Proficient in providing urinary management care.
  • Monitor, record, report symptoms of illness or change in condition.
  • Proficient in comprehensive nursing assessment skills.
  • Provides first aid for common illnesses and injuries.
  • Gives injections during immunization clinics and takes various samples for medical tests.
  • Proficient in obtaining manual/electronic vital signs and assessment of values.
  • Monitor all aspects of client care, including diet and physical activity.
  • Interpret and evaluate diagnostic tests to assess client’s condition.
  • Prepare clients for and assists with examinations, treatments, doctor’s appointments, not limited to transportation to and from appointments.
  • Care management of Durable Medical Equipment and medical supplies.
  • Communicates with the Physician regarding the client’s needs and reports any changes in the client’s condition; obtains/receives orders as required.
  • Coordinates client care services with additional resources, agencies, or hospitals in the community.
  • Collaborates with other Health and Human Services divisions as well as Indian Health Services to ensure efficient treatment of clients.
  • Assists in the development, implementation, and evaluation of standards of care, quality assurance, and infection control activities.
  • Teaches infection control to staff.
  • Counsels and teaches clients and their families on preventative, curative and rehabilitative measures regarding their treatment/diagnosis.
  • Directs, instructs and supervises less skilled nursing/health care personnel.  Monitors documentation.
  • Submits all required documentation related to client’s care and established policies, procedures and regulations.
  • Maintains professional knowledge by conducting research, attending seminars, educational workshops, classes and conferences; reviewing professional publications; establishing networks; participating in professional societies; conferring with representatives of contracting agencies and related organizations.
  • Generates weekly work schedules.
  • Attends case conference and/or interdisciplinary group meetings as requested.
  • Performs other job related duties as assigned and contributes to a team effort.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the Tohono O’odham culture, customs, and traditions.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, tribal laws, regulations and requirements. 
  • Knowledge of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) related rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of basic medical care procedures.
  • Knowledge in performing sterile procedures.
  • Knowledge of most medications and side effects.
  • Knowledge of diabetes and other health disparities.
  • Knowledge of proficient documentation and utilization of Electronic Health Records.
  • Skills in wound management, including wound V.A.C. therapy, application and monitoring.
  • Skill in analyzing problems, projecting consequences, identifying solutions, and implementing recommendations.
  • Skill in providing superior customer service to external and internal customers.
  • Ability to be compassionate and have good communication skills.
  • Ability to deal with stress.
  • Ability to lift, position, or transfer clients and lift supplies and equipment.
  • Ability to carry out instructions furnished in verbal or written format.
  • Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to create and present effective presentations.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgement.
  • Ability to interpret applicable federal, state, county and local laws, regulations, and requirements.
  • Ability to maintain privileged confidential information. 
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with other employees and the general public. 
  • Ability to work independently and meet strict time lines.
  • Ability to travel within the interior/exterior boundaries of the Tohono O’odham Nation.
  • Ability to provide training to others in CPR/First Aid.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize workload independently.
 
Position Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelors of Science in Nursing and three years’ nursing experience.

Licenses, Certifications, Special Requirements:

  • Must be licensed by the Arizona State Board of Nursing Licensure and Registration.
  • Home Health Nursing, preferred.
  • Must have current certifications in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and First Aid.
  • Upon recommendation for hire a criminal background and National FBI check is required to determine suitability for hire, including a 39-month Motor Vehicle Record. 
  • May require possessing and maintaining a valid driver’s license, (no DUIs or major traffic citations within the last three years). 
  • If required, must meet the Tohono O’odham Nation tribal employer’s insurance requirements to receive a driver’s permit to operate program vehicles. 
  • Based on the department’s needs, incumbents may be required to demonstrate fluency in both the Tohono O’odham Language and English as a condition of employment.
