Description

The Houston SPCA is currently seeking an Animal Rescue Technician to join our dedicated animal rescue team. Want to join a dedicated team of professionals who assist the community by responding to calls regarding injured and distressed animals? The Houston SPCA is the only agency in our area providing an injured animal rescue service 24 hours a day 365 days a year.

Essential Functions of the Position:

  • Respond to service calls to assist injured animals or animals in distress within the service area of the Houston SPCA.
  • Prioritize calls and make judgment calls for responding to animals needing assistance based on Houston SPCA protocols and directives issued by the Houston SPCA Command Staff.
  • Establish control and capture of all types of animals in a variety of health and temperaments, including fractious animals and animals in hazardous environments.
  • Report observed health or behavior issues to the appropriate staff on duty.
  • Maintain assigned equipment, supplies and vehicles in safe condition and report any problems or needed repairs to the Animal Care Manager or Supervisor.
  • Maintain database by entering accurate information on the animals in our care.
  • Keep current inventory of necessary program supplies and report shortages to the Chief Animal Cruelty Investigator.
  • Represent the Houston SPCA by providing excellent customer service and focus.
  • Perform additional tasks as assigned.

 
Position Requirements

Candidates must be comfortable handling animals, self motivated and dependable, have a good driving record, be able to work varied shift schedules (weekends and nights included), work in a variety of environmental conditions and be prepared to work as part of a team where other duties may be assigned.

Knowledge, skill and abilities needed to perform the essential functions of this position:

  • High school diploma or equivalent with one year of working experience in an animal care environment
  • Valid U.S. Driver’s License required, with the expectation of obtaining a valid TX driver’s license within 45 days, and must be insurable under the Houston SPCA auto policy.
  • Ability to work unscheduled hours
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs
  • Working knowledge of breeds, diseases, medical conditions, and animal handling and behavior
  • Ability to handle animals safely, with patience and gentleness
  • Ability to represent the Houston SPCA in a professional manner in all situations with the public, volunteers and staff
