Position Requirements

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Requires three years of experience in firefighting, fire safety and education, or fire inspections; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

Requires a valid driver’s license with acceptable driving history.

Must possess at the following certifications: Fire and Life Safety Educator and Fire Inspector I.

Physical Ability: Tasks require the ability to exert very moderate physical effort in light work, typically involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (12-20 pounds).

Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals.  Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

Description

General Description

This classification conducts inspections and code enforcement activities to ensure adherence to local, state and federal fire codes, ordinances and regulations and provide fire prevention education.

Duties and Responsibilities

The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary.

Conducts field inspections to ensure compliance with all adopted codes and ordinances of the City including standard building, life safety, and national fire codes; schedules and conducts field inspections for code compliance of various structures including building, alarm, detection, suppression systems, and other inspections as required or requested.

Identifies code violations and initiates any actions necessary to correct deviations or violations; determines compliance or non-compliance with codes; meets with property and business owners to discuss violations; issues code compliance notices and official correction notices to inform violators of discrepancies and compliance deadlines; and performs follow-up site inspections as needed.

Meets with contractors, architects, developers, business owners, and other individuals to answer questions, provide information and discuss violations; provides advice and direction regarding fire prevention, code compliance and corrective actions.

Schedules and conducts smoke alarm blitzes with field personnel; canvases neighborhoods going door-to-door; provides and installs smoke alarms in homes; maintains inventory of smoke alarms and related documentation.

Maintains documentation of all inspection activities; conducts research; compiles and gathers information and data; prepares and maintains files and logs; prepares and submits statistical and other related reports; enters information gathered and derived from work activities into computer database.

Ensures compliance with all applicable codes, laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures; ensures adherence to established safety procedures; monitors work environment and use of safety equipment to ensure safety of employees and other individual; initiates any actions necessary to correct deviations or violations.

Maintains a comprehensive, current knowledge and awareness of applicable laws, regulations, policies and procedures; maintains an awareness of new equipment, procedures, trends and advances in the profession; reads professional literature; maintains professional affiliations; participates in training and continuing education activities; attends shift meetings, workshops and seminars as appropriate.

Processes a variety of documentation associated with department/division operations, within designated timeframes and per established procedures: receives and reviews various documentation, including letters, flow charts, billing invoices, and apparatus forms; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate; prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, and other documentation, including flow charts and violation notices; compiles data for further processing or for use in preparation of department reports; and maintains computerized and/or hardcopy records.

Additional Functions

Assists with conducting fire safety presentations at schools, festivals, community events, and special events.

Performs other related duties as required.
