Description

Geneva College invites applications for an opening for a tenure-track position in the Department of Biology. This position begins in August 2021. Minority and female applicants are strongly encouraged to apply.

  • A statement which describes the integration of your field and Christian faith in light of the "Foundational Concepts of Christian Education” (these concepts are available at www.geneva.edu/page/employment).
  • A current vita/CV.
  • Unofficial undergraduate and graduate transcripts (official copies will be required before being appointed).
  • List of three references; one should be from your pastor or church leader who can attest to your faith (include names, addresses, e-mail addresses, and telephone numbers).

 

JOB SUMMARY

The selected individual would teach a full-time load (12 contact hours per semester) including General Biology; Genetics (lecture and lab); non-majors biology, and an upper-level course in an area of special expertise, such as Neuroscience, Genomics or Virology. Advising of students and faculty committee work is required. Establishing a research program for undergraduates is desirable.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Selected candidates will be expected to fulfill the following:

Responsibilities:

  • Teach twelve contact hours per semester in lectures and labs.
  • Adequately prepare all course materials and lessons. (Preparation time will vary based on instructor experience in teaching that course.)
  • Provide students with clear course expectations and timelines of evaluations through carefully written topical outlines and approved, standardized syllabus.
  • Provide interesting and relevant assignments for students that demonstrate learning outcomes and make connections to real-life settings.
  • Assist in equipping and maintaining labs.
  • Support the pre-medical program by aiding in MCAT preparation.
  • Suitably challenge, engage, serve and communicate with students to encourage their participation and learning while maintaining mutual value and respect.
  • Complete grade books, final grade sheets, learning assessments and final exam assessments on a timely basis.
  • Engage in scholarly activities, such as research and regular reading of relevant scientific journals.
  • Advise students regarding course selection and career goals.
  • Mentor students one-on-one in the development of Senior Projects.
  • Grow in an understanding of how Christian faith and the discipline of biology are integrated and help students to grow in this area.
  • Participate in serving their church and the Beaver Falls community.
  • Assist in recruiting students to the college.
  • Serve on faculty and college committees.
  • Respond to student questions on a timely basis.
  • Ensure course and program learning outcomes are assessed as defined by the syllabus.
 
Position Requirements

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Christian Commitment

The candidate must be a thoughtful and articulate Christian and an active member of a Protestant evangelical church. Preference will be given to candidates who support and have an articulate understanding of the Reformed faith. The individual must understand and support the College’s doctrinal position as stated in the College Charter and the “Foundational Concepts of Christian Education” by expressing an evangelical Christian profession of faith and demonstrate the ability to integrate a Christian perspective in their work.

 

Education and Experience

  • An earned Ph.D. in an area of cellular biology with graduate-level coursework in genetics.
  • Experience with DNA analysis, e.g., isolation, PCR, sequencing, genome annotation, etc.
  • Some classroom and/or lab teaching experience is beneficial. Willingness to learn how to teach effectively is essential.
  • Creativity in teaching and program development is desirable.

 

Work Environment:

Typical educational setting. Geneva is organized around academic departments. The position is in the Department of Biology. Teaching is at the undergraduate level and primarily on campus, but there is the possibility of future development of graduate and online courses.
