Description

Curbside Groceries is a mobile grocery truck bringing groceries for sale to areas experiencing transportation barriers and gaps in accessibility of affordable, healthy food. Operating in neighborhoods across Prince George’s County, MD, Curbside Groceries sells a full selection of foods—including fresh fruits and vegetables, dairy, and proteins—to provide residents in low food access areas with grocery options  year-round. Curbside Groceries is an initiative of the Capital Area Food Bank, presented through a partnership with Giant Food, United Healthcare, and Washingtonian Magazine.   

The DC Curbside Groceries Coordinator will play a critical role in the day-to-day operations of the truck, support the recruitment of new sites, and manage customer engagement.  This candidate will be responsible for all aspects of the day-to-day operation of the grocery truck project. Successful candidates have the proven ability to independently move a project forward with professional maturity. The manager will work closely with the Grocery Truck Manager at each market stop to service the community with affordable, healthy market basket of foods. The position requires working closely with other departments, especially food resources and development department.

 
Position Requirements

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

COMMUNICATION, COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT, & CUSTOMER SERVICE

  • Displays excellence in customer service through embodying a welcoming and charismatic presence
  • Ability to grow a strong customer base through relationship building
  • Creates outreach materials that increase the number of users of the grocery service and advertise promotions
  • Represents the CAFB in community meeting, on panels and through outreach opportunities.
  • Incorporates feedback from the community and to adjust and update the Mobile Grocery route and stop locations to best serve community needs and ensure customer and staff safety
  • Assist in development of new sites including investigating partnerships based on guidance provided by the Curbside Manager 
  • Customer Engagement via email list serve, text, etc.
  • Update social media weekly according to engagement schedule  
  • Update customer information as needed
  • Create content for social media and email marketing use (i.e., videos, copy for posts) 

TRUCK OPERATIONS & INVENTORY MANAGEMENT

  • Assist with daily cash transactions 
  • Ensure truck is stocked with adequate supplies (I.e., menus, surveys, bags, etc.) 
  • Ensures accurate accounting of grocery inventory
  • Supports the set up and breakdown of the market at each location
  • Load and unload grocery items for safe food storage according to FIFO
  • Ensure food safety standards are met throughout market process
  • Restock products, and maintain the market’s inventory and produce quality
  • Conduct transactions, handling different payments
  • Assist in inspection of inventory for appropriateness for sale and/or donation

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • 1 – 3 years of work exp in a related field. 
  • 2-3 years of customer service experience or member management 
  • High comfort level working with diverse community organizations 
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal 
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office systems, Experience with electronic databases and internet resources 
  • Ability to Obtain Certified Food Protection Manager certification
  • Knowledge of the DC Metro Area
  • Experience using various data base and software systems
  • Ability to defuse and resolve challenges with customers
  • Commitment to creating food access in every community
  • This position requires you to be fully vaccinated per the DC GOV Mandate   

COMPETENCIES:

  • Access to reliable vehicle strongly preferred 
  • Must have a valid driver’s license
  • Familiarity with issues of food access, urban poverty, and local community a plus
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to keep detailed records  
  • Self-starter with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively 
  • Strong interpersonal skills and experience with conflict resolution 
  • Experience presenting trainings and/or workshops 
  • Positive demeanor and sense of humor a plus
