Job Summary

This position is required to support all departments for assistance when understaffed, or as needed. This requires a high level of adaptability and knowledge of all medicine types. As a member of the healthcare team, working under the direction of the physician/provider, the Medical Assistant Float is responsible to assist in the examination and treatment of patients to deliver high quality care and service, maintaining patient confidentiality at all times. The work is varied and fast paced, requiring the ability to listen thoroughly and multi-task.

The Medical Assistant Float is experienced, requiring a greater knowledge, encompassing the skills and training of the Medical Assistant 1 and 2. The amount of work review and direct supervision are minimal, with increased independence and responsibility. Complexity or variety of work is higher and involves highly specialized tasks requiring additional training and possible certifications. Other duties may be assigned.

Position Requirements

Education, Licenses, Certifications and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion certificate from a recognized medical assisting school.
  • Certification as a Medical Assistant in good standing with a national organization from one of the following:
  • American Association of Medical Assistants (CMA),
  • American Medical Technologist
  • National Healthcareer Association
  • National Center for Competency Testing
  • Current ABR-OE through the AAMA.
  • Current State Laboratory Certification if collecting and/or handling specimens.
  • Current CPR certification.



  • Minimum of four years recent experience preferred, preferably in an ambulatory/clinical setting.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of electronic medical records and order entry.
  • Knowledge of CLIA and OSHA guidelines.
  • Knowledge of sterilization and disinfection procedures.
  • Knowledge of HIPAA laws and ability to adhere to confidentiality policies..
  • Knowledge of current medical assistant best practices and procedures including EKG and basic drugs.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and medical office procedures.
  • Working knowledge of medical database computer programs and basic Microsoft office products.
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret common scientific and technical journals, professional journals, business periodicals, and/or government regulations.
  • Ability to operate common office and medical equipment
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to comprehend and apply mathematical concepts and interpret measurements.
  • Ability to interpret and read documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedural manuals.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to identify and apply proper communication methods in patient instruction.
  • Skills to implement good safety practices that prevent exposure to known workplace hazards and the necessary action needed when exposedSkills to operate a computer, use internet resources, and to effectively work in the electronic medical record.
  • Skill in applying and modifying principles, methods and techniques of a medical assistant to provide ongoing patient care.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent telephone and customer service skills.
  • Strong attention to detail skills.
  • Excellent phlebotomy skills.
