The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures furthers the understanding, celebration, and preservation of cinema through inclusive and accessible exhibitions, screenings, programs, and collections. Welcoming visitors from Los Angeles and around the world, the Museum works in active partnership with motion picture artists and specialists, scholars, staff, and diverse communities to contextualize and challenge dominant narratives around cinema, inspiring discourse, connection, joy, and discovery.

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer of the Museum, the Director of Retail will oversee the strategic development, presentation and sale of merchandise, including the creation of exclusive products. The Director will oversee the operations of all distribution channels and further expand, build upon and develop e-commerce and other sales operations. You will also manage all retail merchandising and on-site retail store operations and ensure staff provides excellent customer service to visitors at the Museum. Guests must leave having a red carpet retail experience.

You Will:

  • Manage the Store Manager and other retail operations staff including training and performance management.
  • Administer and monitor performance against income and expense budget.
  • Develop an annual revenue and expense budget, including sales and gross margins by category. Prepare monthly financial reports for store sales. Verify that daily activity is reported to accounting.
  • Develop retail events including book signings, together with the Education, Development and Marketing staff.
  • Negotiate licensing agreements, coordinate vendor and consignor relationships select merchandise.
  • Work with Museum Interactives Manager on development of sales promotion and memberships.
  • Create cash handling procedures; assure the safekeeping of cash and other sales media within the Retail Store.
  • Oversee annual physical inventory, inventory safeguarding, and maintenance of point of sales inventory system.
  • Assure that store sales receipts are safeguarded, and quickly remitted to accounting for deposit.
  • Implement controls for the safekeeping of inventory from loss or theft.
  • Manage the implementation of the ecommerce site.
  • Partner with curators to ensure that the merchandise mix represents exhibitions on view.
  • Develop merchandise using the Museum’s style guide that promote the brand.
  • Create the presentation of merchandise in the store using existing fixtures.
 
Position Requirements

You Have:

  • 5+ years of retail experience in a managerial role.
  • Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Experience with retail financial analysis and point-of-sale systems required.
  • Experience sourcing opportunities, product development and creating merchandising strategies.
  • Knowledge in negotiating licensing agreements desirable.
  • An entrepreneurial spirit with the ability to create an exceptional customer service experience.
