Pay Rate Starting Salary 2021: Recruit (During Academy) $50,782/yr. Patrolman 2nd Class (Once sworn) $56,024/yr. Patrolman 1st Class (Generally, 2nd Year) $63,358/yr. Afternoon Shift Incentive: $2,500/yr. Midnight Shift Incentive: $3,500/yr.  
Description
SUMMARY
 
The City of South Bend seeks qualified applicants who desire an active, challenging, and unique career where they can make a difference within the City of South Bend. Qualified applicants should be prepared to partner with, protect, and serve the residents and visitors of the City of South Bend. Selected applicants will become South Bend Police Department recruits and attend the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy.  We hope for an academy date in 2021, but may be later in the year due to COVID or other reasons.  Applicants should receive monthly updates from the South Bend Police Department. Dates for the physical agility test are not yet available. Additional information about the process can be found by following the link provided at the end of the application. Upon successful completion of the academy, recruits would have a career as a police officer for the City of South Bend. Police officers, under general supervision, perform a wide variety of duties involved with the enforcement of laws and the prevention of crimes.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
 
· Monitor radio and communication devices to receive assignments and calls.
· Maintain awareness of activities in assigned areas.
· Effectively communicate, verbally and written, in the English language.
· Assist citizens with problems.
· Patrol on foot or by driving a vehicle, responding to assigned calls, and searching for suspicious activity or situations.
· Respond to calls by driving, walking, or running to a specific location.
· Refer persons to appropriate social service agencies when situations warrant.
· Assess situations, determine the need for assistance of other officers or agencies, and take appropriate action.
· Provide emergency aid to injured people and move people away from danger, including carrying unconscious people.
· Investigate accidents and reports of crimes. Gather evidence, record observations and statements of witnesses, victims, and suspects.
· Direct removal of vehicles involved in accidents and maintain an orderly flow of other traffic, both vehicular and pedestrian.
· Search crime scenes and take prescribed actions to preserve and protect evidence. Record findings and observations.
· Pursue and apprehend suspects, use appropriate means to protect the public and transport suspects to the detention area.
· Use appropriate means and weapons to restrain people from physically striking and injuring others.
· Drive a vehicle safely at high speed when an emergency warrants.
· Assure citizens obey all traffic laws. Advise drivers of safe driving practices. Verify license and registration data. Issue citations or make arrests as warranted.
· Take appropriate action to protect life and property.
· Maintain visibility in the community. Meet and talk with people. Visit local business. Provide information and make presentations to neighborhoods, civic organizations, and schools.
· Testify in court and prepare for such testimony by reviewing reports and notes. Meet with attorneys and obtain appropriate evidence.
· Maintain physical fitness, uniforms, equipment, and weapons.
· Participate in training on law enforcement procedures.
· Perform related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Basic Eligibility Requirements
 
· Must be a United States Citizen.
· Must be at least 21 years of age by the closing date of the application but not yet 40 years of age when sworn as a police officer. Eligible military veterans are able to be sworn up until age 40.5.  ***UPDATE*** New Indiana Code allows individuals to be up to age 40.
· Must be a high school graduate, as evidenced by a transcript issued by an accredited high school. An achievement test certificate from an accredited high school or State Board of education is acceptable.
· Must possess a valid unrestricted driver’s license.
· Must be willing, if appointed, to reside within St. Joseph County or adjoining county in Indiana. ****UPDATE**** New Indiana Code allows individuals to reside within 50 miles of the City. IC 36-8-4-2.

· DD214 (Armed Services Discharge – if applicable).
· High school diploma or GED.
· Official and sealed high school transcripts. (When requested by training staff)
· Official and sealed college transcripts. (When requested by training staff)
· Birth certificate.
· Social Security Card.
· Valid driver’s license.
 
SELECTION PROCESS
 
· Physical agility test. (On the testing day, bring an ID and waivers will be made available at the location. Candidates will NOT need a physicial from a physician. Additional information will be provided once the application is completed. Additional information can be found by clicking here.)
· Written examination.
· Personal interview.
· Oral Interview Board.
· Background investigation.
· Polygraph/Voice Stress examination.
· MMPI and psychological examination.
· Pension (PERF) physical examination.

· Documented evidence of domestic violence.
· Military rejection or early discharge for reason/concern.
· Marijuana use beyond experimental usage.
