NATURE OF WORK

This is professional human service counselor position involved in providing crisis intervention,  short-term counseling and other support services for youth and families through the Youth and Family Services Division.

An essential part of the duties of this position is assisting in developing a flexible and anticipatory organization that will provide cost-effective and customer-friendly delivery of quality services to the community.  This includes developing new ways to deliver both the short and long-term needs of South Windsor residents consistent with the Town’s goals and objectives.

Work is supervised by the Division Director. Clinical oversight and support by the Clinical Coordinator.  Work will be reviewed regularly for overall program effectiveness and efficiency.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Assumes responsibilities to provide direct services including crisis and short-term counseling, information and referral and program support to designated client group consistent with the Town’s goals of establishing and maintaining quality community services through cost-effective, customer-friendly service delivery.

Conducts crisis intervention and/or short-term counseling sessions with clients and/or their families and makes referrals to state and community service agencies, as appropriate; maintains accurate case records and related files.

Supports the town’s Juvenile Review Board by providing case management and assessments.

Accesses clients through office visits, schools and outreach

Responsible for case management and maintenance; compiles ongoing narratives for case records.

Networks with schools, police, courts and other agencies to ensure good case management

Facilitates support groups as needed

Assists in the development, implementation and facilitation of Youth and Family Services programs as needed; assists with other human service functions as needed

Prepares narrative and statistical reports as needed.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS

Performs related work as required.

Position Requirements

REQUIREMENTS OF WORK

Master’s Degree in Counseling, Marriage and Family Therapy or Social Work required.  Two years of experience in providing counseling and other supportive services to youth and families.

Considerable knowledge of youth/human services delivery systems and the human behavior of diverse groups.

Knowledge of social group behavior in community center that includes a senior center and teen center

Ability to relate to diverse population groups.

Ability to comprehend complex human problems and recommend appropriate solutions.

Ability to use personal computer and standard office software.

Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.           

Ability to work a flexible schedule that will include days and evenings to best fit needs of clients

Ability to perform work consistent with the Town’s goals of establishing and maintaining quality community services through cost-effective, customer-friendly service delivery.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, co-workers, division directors, other town departments/schools, other human services agencies and the general public.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Possess a valid Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator’s License.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit and talk or hear; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; and reach with hands and arms.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.  Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and various pieces of office equipment.  The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.

 
Salary Information $44,850 to $50,700 per year depending on experience. Union position.
