Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory (SHC) is a Lasallian Vincentian Catholic, co-educational college preparatory secondary school located in the heart of San Francisco, California. Position Summary:

The Financial Controller is an integral part of the Finance Office. Reporting to the Director of Finance, the Controller will be responsible for all aspects of accounting for the School. The Controller will be directly responsible for completing financial reports, annual audit, internal controls, fiscal policies and procedures, management of general ledger, and overseeing day-to-day financial operations of accounting functions. The Financial Controller position is hands-on, full time, year-round position. As a supervisor, on campus presence is an essential duty of the position.

Supervisory Responsibilities: 3 FTE (Accounts Payable / Treasury, Accounts Receivable, Payroll)

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage, prepare and monitor all day-to-day accounting transactions of the organization.

  • Oversee and implement internal control best practices. Responsible for identifying and leading internal control and process improvements.

  • Drive monthly close process and ensure timely preparation of general ledger reconciliations and analyses.

  • Prepare monthly and quarterly financial statements, perform insightful financial analysis, and report key metrics to business leaders and the executive team.

  • Implement policy and procedure changes, including communication and training to the SHC community.

  • Collaborate with the Director of Finance to prepare financial planning models and assist with the operating and capital budgets. Provide special and routine budget and forecast reports.

  • Lead special initiatives and projects to strengthen financial processes and systems.

  • Manage the annual audit, ensuring timely and accurate completion of all audit procedures and deliverables.

  • Coordinate with all School departments to ensure accurate financial data and efficient processes.

  • Ensure compliance with IRS, GAAP reporting requirements, Federal and State regulations.

  • Provide leadership in a fast-paced environment.

  • Train, lead and develop staff.

  • Perform duties and supervise on campus/school property.

  • Must be available to work outside school hours and weekends as the position warrants.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Finance.

Position Requirements

Qualification and Skills:

  • Ability to work collaboratively and proactively in a dynamic and fast-paced environment with changing priorities

  • Strong project management skills, with demonstrated ability to manage deadlines

  • Proven leadership, communication and teamwork abilities

  • Ability to work overtime, evenings and weekends as needed

  • Proficient in systems selection, implementation, and optimization from an accounting perspective

  • Highly organized

  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills

  • Excellent written and oral communicator

Education and/or Experience:

  • CPA or equivalent work experience required

  • Bachelor’s Degree required

  • Minimum of 5 years of managerial/supervisory experience

  • Effective decision making skills

  • Experience in not-for-profit accounting preferred

  • Excellent Microsoft Excel skills preferred

Computer Skills:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be proficient in Microsoft software applications, Google Suite/Gmail and internet usage, and database management. Must be proficient with General Ledger and related software programs.
