Description

Reporting to the VP, Medicine and Academic Affairs, the successful applicant will provide leadership for the overall operation and administration of the Health Sciences Library & Corporate Archives. The Manager is responsible for providing high quality, integrated and evidence-based health information to all hospital staff to enable informed decision making in patient care, research and education, consistent with hospital wide strategic priorities. The Manager is also responsible for the appraisal, preservation and use of corporate records of permanent value, as well as maintaining an effective integrated records management program for administrative records in print format.

Main Areas of Responsibility

  • Prepare and maintain annual operating budget for Library & Archives Services.
  • Develop and maintain an adequate, up-to-date library collection pertinent to the needs of users.
  • Supervise staff including library / archives coordinator, volunteers, casual help and co-op students.
  • Oversee and evaluate all aspects of library/ archival operations to achieve highest possible quality services and standards of practice.
  • Conduct in-depth reference and research consultations with clinicians, scientists, researchers and students, utilizing a variety of bibliographic databases.
  • Assist with systematic reviews and other knowledge syntheses in health sciences and other subject areas as required.
  • Develop and deliver library user education programs, group and one-on-one instruction on research skills, critical appraisal, bibliographic management and scholarly publishing, etc.
  • Appraise and dispose of corporate records, in compliance with legislative and regulatory requirement, and Record Retention & Disposal Schedule.
  • Undertake the arrangement and description of archival records in all formats, and maintain lnMagic DB/TextWorks databases for the management of archival holdings and administrative records kept at both on-site and off-site storage locations.
  • Keep abreast of professional knowledge and new trends in information technology and their application to teaching and learning.
  • Participate in internal / external committees and professional organizations.
  • Develop collaborative partnerships with the University of Toronto Libraries, Toronto Academic Health Science Network (TAHSN) hospital libraries, Health Science Information Consortium of Toronto (HSICT) and other community libraries to facilitate sharing of resources, information and expertise.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Master's degree in Library Science or Information Studies from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited institution or acceptable equivalent.
  • Five or more years of professional experience with progressive responsibility at management level, preferably in a health-related academic setting.
  • Competence in organizational and financial management, evidence-based information seeking practices and effective teaching and presentation skills.
  • High level of competence in the use of Ovid databases, PubMed, EBSCO databases and EndNote.
  • Knowledge of records management principles and practices.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, strong decision-making and problem solving abilities.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to establish positive and productive collaborations with clinicians, scientists, researchers and students.
  • Familiarity with the National Library of Medicine classification system, lnMagic DB/TextWorks software and the Ex Libris Alma library platform would be an asset
