Description

POSITION SUMMARY

The incumbent of this position organizes, directs, and reviews work, administers personnel matters, establishes, and maintains logistical systems for the staff in the House Supervisor’s department and patient transporters department in the Division of Nursing Services. This position provides leadership in coordinating patient care activities and support activities to assure smooth hospital operation during weekends, evenings, and night tours. Incumbent is responsible for assuring that adequate staff are available to meet patient care needs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Ensures adequate coverage for staff in all units during the current shift and the upcoming shift. Notifies the Unit Director of staffing shortages when the unit is unable to find a replacement for a staff opening caused by an employee with an unplanned absence.
  2. Serves as the onsite Hospital Administrator after hours and on weekends. Collaborates with the Hospital Administrator on call to make decisions that affect the routine/daily operation of the hospital or its clinics.
  3. Participates in the operational activities of the healthcare system that contribute towards process improvements in the delivery of safe patient care.
  4. Actively supports TCRHCC’s Recruitment/Retention activities.
  5. Assist with management of employees, in collaboration with the unit Directors or their designee. Recommends staff recognition, disciplinary action, reassignments, promotion, and other personnel actions to employee’s specific director. Works with all unit Directors as peers and assists with all aspects of personnel administration, if needed.
  6. Coordinates admissions, discharges and transfers (intra- and inter- facility), utilizing the patient classification system as a basis to determine patient needs. Assists charge nurse with determining patient care assignments.
  7. Coordinates call back for support departments i.e. facilities/biomed for physical plant issues or the operating room and medical staff due to trauma activation or physician request. Makes nursing rounds to evaluate patient care, staffing, environmental, and safety aspects.
  8. Evaluates staff skill levels and assesses the need for educational activities. Recommends training needs to unit Directors and the Chief Nurse Officer (CNO). Assists the CNO and Directors in program planning, setting goals, standards, and evaluation
  9. Supports and participates in the Nursing Department’s Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI), Infection Control, Discharge Planning, Risk Management, and Safety Programs. Participates in the development of Hospital Emergency Plans, assists with education of staff and coordination of Nursing Department responses.
  10. Serves as nursing representative on assigned hospital and nursing committees. Assists as directed with all activities related to compliance with the Joint Commission and Federal regulations.
  11. Provides monthly reports to CNO summarizing activities as directed, i.e. EMTALA report, monthly productivity report.
  12. Provides skilled and comprehensive nursing care to patients, who because of the extensiveness or complexity of their condition require frequent adaptation of the usual nursing process. Provides consultation and guidance to staff nurses as needed in dealing with complicated or critical patients.
  13. Actively participates in providing education to the service population regarding the facility’s mission and service availability to the community. In concert with the aforementioned element, will on annual basis develop and implement a program to educate the community about the mission and services available.
  14. Assists with planning, organizing, directing, and evaluating a comprehensive staff development, education and performance improvement program for the House Supervisor team, including patient transporters.
  15. Assists in maintaining equipment, supply purchases, travel, and training for staff in the House Supervisor department.
  16. Assists with leadership, guidance, professionalism, and evaluation to the House Supervisor team.
  17. Responsible for completing work schedules and adjusting those work schedules as needed to meet department staffing needs.
  18. Evaluates daily operations and services provided by working collaboratively with nursing managers and medical providers to assure efficient use of resources, maximizing patient flows/work flows/productivity, and takes appropriate corrective and evaluative action as needed.
  19. Recommends promotions, reassignments, performance awards, and disciplinary actions for employees. Approves and denies leave for the house supervisor team, including the patient transporters. Completes performance appraisals for the House Supervisor team, including patient transporters. Resolves informal complaints of employees and refers those beyond department level to higher management if warranted.
  20. Conducts department staff meetings to include in-services and training as needed.
  21. Fosters a collaborative environment, using a team approach, in which ideas are shared and valued to promote safe, patient centered care
  22. Demonstrates ability to execute assigned projects and initiatives.
  23. Responsible for electronic health records data entry pertinent to patient service role.
  24. Performs other duties as signed

Physical:

Work requires walking, long hours of standing, bending, reaching, and sitting.  Work may require some lifting in assisting inpatient care and moving medical equipment and supplies.  Work is performed on a rotational basis on all shifts, including weekends, and holidays.

Mental:

The incumbent exercises appropriate judgment to determine the nature of patient care and other services to be provided utilizing own initiative and instructions by the CNO and/or Deputy CNO.

 
Position Requirements

NECESSARY QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • Must have a bachelor’s degree in Nursing

Certifications:

  • A valid, current, full and unrestricted Professional Nursing License to practice nursing in any state of the United States of America, The Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States
  • Must maintain and have a current valid BLS/ACLS Certification
  • Must maintain and have a current valid PALS/TNCC Certification, if not, may become certified within 6 months from date of hire.

Experience:

  • Must have three (3) years of current and continuous acute care experience with two (2) years in a critical care specialty area, i.e. ICU, ED. and demonstrate progressive leadership experience, such as Lead Clinical Nurse or Unit Manager

A record of satisfactory performance in all prior and current employment as evidenced by positive employment references from previous and current employers. All employment references must address and indicate success in each one of the following areas:
