Library Preparator 

Description

The Margaret Herrick Library seeks a qualified Library Preparator to support the exhibition activities of the Academy's Archival Foundation. You are energetic, self-motivated, reliable and a detail-oriented individual with the ability to work both independently and as a collaborative team member on multiple time-sensitive tasks. You will be primarily responsible for the preparation of external loans as well as preparation and installation of internal exhibitions at the various Academy locations.

This is a temporary part-time position for about 8 months.

Responsibilities:

  • Safely handle, mat/frame and install collection material for display and transport using established methods and preservation-quality materials under the supervision of a conservator, registrar and/or archivist.
  • Create appropriate preservation-quality housing and supports for collection material in storage and in transit.
  • Transport and handle collection materials safely between departments and buildings employing various methods depending on size, weight, and condition of objects.
  • Assist with the maintenance of vault/storage spaces including general maintenance and cleaning.
  • Perform other duties as requested and/or required and according to a schedule that might rotate or change to accommodate work demands or staffing variations.
 
Position Requirements
  • High School/GED required. BFA or BA degree preferred.
  • 3+ years of experience handling art or artifacts in a museum, high-end gallery, or art handling company and demonstrated success in exhibit preparation.
  • Experience working to install collections following museum industry best practices for collections handling and security as well as best practices for packing and crating.
  • Knowledge of museum standards and best practices as well as understanding of best practices and preservation-quality materials for packing and installing artwork.
  • Computer proficiency and excellent communication skills.
  • License to operate a variety of vehicles and forklifts.
  • Fine motor skills and experience with hand tools and lifting apparatuses.
  • Must be able to sit, walk, stand, climb stairs and ladders, and lift or push objects up to 50 pounds.
