Description

The Family Support Community Worker operates supportive, educational programmes and services for parents and caregivers connected to the Annavale Nursery School using a community development approach, under the direction of the Parent-Child and Youth Services (PCYS) Program Director, and in consultation with the Annavale team members and in response to clients needs. This work is done within the scope of practice mandated by the relevant professional college, if applicable.

Program-Related Activities

  • Provides family support services to Annavale preschool families (supports families through the subsidy application process; refers to and assists families to access community services as needed).
  • Completes an initial assessment and appropriate screening with every new registration to determine areas of enhanced support needs.
  • Manages caseload (integrate/coordinate resources, crisis intervention, supportive counselling, information and referrals, supports parents, and provides advice on parenting).
  • Consults with Annavale teaching staff to identify families needing greater support.
  • Acts as a role model in interactions with parents/caregivers and children; uses behaviour management both in group activities and on a one-on-one basis in home settings as required.
  • Provides one-on-one family support focused on parenting and based on jointly identified family needs.
  • Assists parents/caregivers to plan for a stimulating programme of activities to meet the children's needs in the home.
  • Facilitates transition from nursery school to JK/SK school environment through parent education focused on school readiness and communication with destination school to ensure a warm hand-over for children requiring extra support for transition to school.
  • Supports Early Childhood Educators in preparing progress reports for nursery school children and discusses these with parents on an individual basis.
  • Supports Early Childhood Educators in the classroom at least one day per week to gain knowledge of each individual child’s development within program and tailor parenting support accordingly.
  • Identifies high-need families in service area and links to family support and related services, as appropriate.
  • Coordinates special activities/events/outings for families with young children.
  • Develops and maintains up-to-date resource materials relevant to Annavale families.
  • Ensures accountability by providing registrations, statistics and reports of activities and keeping client records within the safeguards of confidentiality.
  • Plans, develops, coordinates, and delivers programmes that enhance child welfare and development, such as parent education in a group format and/or individually, family visits, drop-ins, and others as needs are identified.
  • Collects required data as per proposal requirements and prepare annual report, in coordination with Program Director.
  • Conduct needs assessment and program evaluations.
  • Perform other related duties assigned from time to time by the Programme Director.
  • Participates in the selection, orientation, and supervision of volunteers as required.
  • Supervises students in practicum placements as required.

 

 
Position Requirements

Education

  • Early Childhood Education Diploma and/or Bachelor’s degree in social work or social service work, or another relevant discipline required; or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience.

Professional experience

  • Three to five years full-time experience in running parent education, parenting support programs to families with young children, both group-based and one on one.
  • Three to five years full-time experience providing supportive services to low income, multicultural families, and vulnerable families.
  • Experience working with preschool age children in a childcare environment.
  • Experience with current assessment, counselling, case management and crisis intervention techniques as related to providing supportive counselling to vulnerable families with young children.
  • In-depth and broad knowledge of early childhood development, parenting support, with a focus of attachment principles and trauma-informed care.
  • In-depth and broad knowledge of community resources, especially family services and children’s resources in Ottawa.
  • Experience in establishing networks with relevant program and service providers.
  • Experience with adult education principles and group dynamics.
  • Experience and interest in working with marginalized and diverse clientele, such as low-income, high-needs, newcomer, and a variety of multicultural communities.
  • Experience in program development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation.
  • Experience in a non-profit, community-based organization.

Key Competencies

  • Knowledge of child development and behaviour management.
  • Knowledge of evidence-based parenting programs in Ontario.
  • Understanding of family dynamics and issues relevant to working with low-income (multi-risks) parents/caregivers.
  • Thorough knowledge of and proficiency in current assessment and intervention techniques.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of community resources and community-based health care.
  • Knowledge of resources for children with special needs.
  • Ability to work independently and in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, oral and written, in English.
  • Good organizational skills; flexibility; ability to adapt to changing situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a multi-cultural, multi-disciplinary team environment.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the use of computers and various software applications, including Microsoft Office programs, client database software, and electronic record keeping in a client services setting.

Linguistic Profile

  • French/English bilingualism is preferred.
  • A third language relevant to our client population is an asset.

Salary Range $26.27/hour - $30.90/hour
