We are looking for an enthusiastic Software Developer with an interest in building dynamic, data-driven products.

U.S. News empowers everyone to thrive. The developers at U.S. News have a great deal of independence and a minimum of overhead. By leveraging React.js, Python, AWS cloud, Google BigQuery, data science and other latest technologies, you’ll be driving a major transformation within U.S. News.

The successful candidate will become an influential member of a passionate, friendly, and growing team that creates web applications which reach millions of visitors monthly. Developers typically see applications through from beginning to end, working directly with project owners to create, implement, upgrade, optimize, and test features and projects.

We offer a casual work environment. Our offices are in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, D.C. We are also open to having this person work remotely from anywhere in the U.S.

 

Are you up to the challenge?

This position requires comfort working with backend technologies for web site development. Our developers thrive in a collaborative environment but also excel at solving challenges independently. We use the React JavaScript framework to assemble interactive, visually apprealing web pages according to desing mock-ups along with Python language to build web applications which are used to store and serve data. Additionally, we test and fix bugs or other coding issues in Python and React web applications. We work in a Unix environment and deploy and debug within AWS environments. We work within an Agile software development workflow with designers, analysts, stakeholders, and testers to build products as efficiently and effectively as possible. 

 
Position Requirements

You should definitely have experience with:

  • Using the React JavaScript framework to assemble interactive, visually appealing web pages according to design mock-ups
  • Using the Python language to build web applications which store and serve data to HTTP requests
  • Testing and fixing bugs or other coding issues in Python and React web applications
  • Deploying and debugging in cloud environments (AWS)
  • Styling web pages with CSS preprocessors and CSS-in-JS libraries
  • Storing and accessing data in relational databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL)
  • Synthesizing many different technologies and in multiple environments
  • Interpreting requirements and estimating level of effort
  • Working in an Agile software development workflow with designers, analysts, stakeholder and testers to build products as efficiently and effectively as possible
  • Mentoring junior developers and serving as a technical role model
  • Contributing to architecture discussions
  • Reviewing code delivered by peers

It would be nice if you had experience with:

  • CI/CD pipelines such as Jenkins

  • Cloud environments such as AWS

  • Modern JavaScript frameworks, such as React

  • Modern JavaScript patterns and ES6
