Our ever-growing EMPOWER Program has an immediate opportunity for a Food Truck Assistant to join their New Bern team. The position will support both New Bern and Ahoskie locations requiring travel between both areas. The Part-Time schedule is flexible based on Food Truck's activity and events. Mon-Fri with occasional eves. & weekends.  


Under the supervision of the Program Director or designee, the Food Truck Assistant provides employment support services to individuals participating in the SensABLE Snacks food truck program. This initiative, which operates within the Transition to Work program grant, provides adults with Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities a positive work training and/or experience through duties associated with serving snacks in the community from the food truck. These services exclude those that are considered rehabilitative in nature.

  • Recognize the short and long-term goals for the project and how the individual being supported will fit into the program.
  • Assist with identifying individual goals with team support and/or via formal and informal vocational assessments.
  • Assist in developing and monitoring outcomes and adjusts as needed.
  • Assist individuals we support with inclusion.
  • Respect the dignity and individuality of each individual and his/her right to confidentiality.
  • Assist individuals we support with daily needs.
  • Ensure that the safety, health, hygiene, and nutritional needs of the individuals we support are met.
  • Lift and transfer individuals we support as needed.
  • Assist individuals at learning and increasing skills in all areas of independence. This includes, but is not limited to: Self-help skills, independent living skills, accessing community resources and pursuit of leisure activities, and employment goals. If an individualized plan exists, this document serves as a guide for these supports.
  • Complete required paperwork (may vary by location) accurately and as required by the program.
  • Complete recommended training in order to best serve the program and individual needs.
  • Support food truck intern or food truck staff as they learn and follow food truck job duty protocols.
  • Complete training and in-service to learn the food truck operations checklists and procedures.
  • Assist individuals in any element of the business including but not limited to actual vending on the truck. Other duty areas include shopping, inventory measurement, and stocking, cleaning tasks, maintaining food truck equipment, administration, and marketing tasks.
  • Perform customer service duties in a manner that models appropriate behavior for successful sales retention and hospitality industry acceptance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the food truck shift leader, program managers, or other supervisors
Position Requirements


  • High School diploma or equivalent from an accredited institution recognized by the state education system required.
  • Two-years of experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities preferred.
  • Ability to work independently, handle multiple responsibilities and assigning priority to activities.
  • Ability to manage the goals of multiple individuals and families on a timely basis.
  • Must complete and maintain current Easter Seals UCP training curriculum, which includes, but not limited to the following: CPR/First Aid, NCI (as appropriate), Medication Administration (as appropriate), OSHA/BBP training, core competencies and other trainings relevant to the position as defined by local program guidelines.
  • Must be able to work weekends, early mornings, and evenings as needed.
  • Must have valid state appropriate driver’s license and reliable transportation. May be required to transport supported individuals to and from job sites in personal vehicle.

Essential physical requirements:

  • Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 Lbs.
  • Must possess the visual acuity to develop written correspondence and determine accuracy, neatness and thoroughness of the work assigned.
  • Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of talking, hearing, sitting for long periods of time and performing repetitive motions such as using a computer.
  • Must be able to perform the physical tasks necessary to support individuals such as lifting, bending, and standing. These tasks are unique to the individual supported and/or the particular vending sites.
  • Ability to climb up and down stairs, stand, bend, stoop, stretch, reach, twist and work for long periods in the confined space of a food truck.


The Food Truck Assistant is typically in multiple environments including home base and community settings that include vending sites such as parks, businesses, city streets, and other open-air venues. The nature of the job lends itself to being at mercy of the weather, customer demand, and environmental circumstances; thus, the work can change pace quickly and the staff may encounter uncomfortable sensory experiences. SensABLE Snacks operates in the public purview and is subject to video/audiotaping for internal security protection measures as well as marketing strategies that include filming, photography and social media. Staff are exposed to situations where the public may not ask for permission to photograph, videotape, and upload content to social media.
