Description

The AmeriCorps Program at Opportunity Village will greatly expand services available to Southern Nevada's developmentally disabled population by developing and teaching a robust curriculum with a focus on employment training and related life skills. Education Specialists will be responsible for embedding in existing campus programs, developing connections with individuals served, and creating and teaching an effective set of classes over the course of their service year. Applicants for this role will start on October 26th, 2021 and serve until August 20th, 2021.

Opportunity Village has been serving individuals with intellectual disabilities for decades. Each year, we help over 2,000 people lead more independent and fulfilling lives. By implementing this new, innovative education program, led by AmeriCorps members, we hope to greatly increase the both the quality of life for individuals served, by increasing their knowledge of life skills necessary to lead an independent, healthy life (cooking, cleaning, hobbies) and teaching them about different jobs and the skills necessary to succeed within them.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and design vocational and related classes specialized for individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities.
  • Teach classes and help facilitate other learning sessions on Opportunity Village campuses as needed.
  • Ensure all proper documentation is complete related to individual's curriculum progress.
  • Collaborate with other staff to ensure adults with disabilities gain knowledge of self-management and behavioral skills that will enhance their contribution to and integration into the community.
  • Promote an abuse and neglect-free environment.
  • Report suspected Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation (ANE) within 24 hours as mandated by state law.
  • Participate in a National Day of Service.
  • Ensure equipment is clean, safe and functioning.
  • Comply with all Federal, State (Desert Regional Center) and local regulations and requirements, and company policies and procedures.
  • Perform other AmeriCorps program-related duties as assigned.

Benefits

Members will receive a living allowance of ~$292 every two weeks before taxes throughout service, totaling approximately ~$6,500 for the year. After successfully completing their service year, AmeriCorps Members will also be awarded the Segal Education Award at the value of $3,097.50. The Segal Education Award can be used to pay approved past, present, and future educational expenses. Members will receive mandatory training at New Hire Orientation, CPI and CPR classes (if member does not already have certification), and AmeriCorps-specific orientation before starting their duties.

Members will work closely with one of Nevada's largest non-profits and gain valuable experience working with individuals with intellectual disabilities, designing and facilitating a variety of courses with their needs in mind. At the end of service, members will be able to say they were integral in helping to establish a first-of-its-kind vocational program for individuals with intellectual disabilities.

Federal student loan forbearance is available for eligible members.

 
Position Requirements

Skills

  • Ability to communicate effectively with individuals, co-workers and supervisors (verbal and written).

  • Ability to interpret instructions, gain knowledge and have initiative.

Education and Experience

  • Required: High school diploma or equivalent (GED)
  • Required: Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid Certification is required. If you do not have certification, we will provide the training necessary for you.
  • Required: Current Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) Certification is required. If you do not have certification, we will provide the training necessary for you.
  • Preferred: Previous experience developing and facilitating curriculum.
  • Preferred: Previous experience working with individuals with disabilities.

Physical Abilities & Work Environment

Term of Service

To successfully complete their half-time year of service and become eligible for their education award, AmeriCorps Members must serve an average of 24 hours per week between October 26, 2020 and August 20, 2021. Approximately 20 of these hours will be served on campus, either facilitating sessions or developing lesson plans, while the remaining hours each week will be completed remotely.

Opportunity Village campuses are open five days a week, Monday through Friday, from 7am to 7pm. Classes taught by Education Specialists will be offered in two schedules, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, each day at Opportunity Village’s two main campuses.

Education Specialists are expected to be available to teach at least three to four days a week, either during a morning shift or afternoon shift at one of the site locations below. The rest of a member’s service hours will be filled through content development and other education-related activities and can be completed flexibly and/or remotely, on a schedule developed with approval from the AmeriCorps Program Manager.

This position does not duplicate work of previous or existing employees or volunteers, supplant the hiring of workers, or include service or duties that have been performed or were performed by a current employee, an employee who recently resigned or was discharged, an employee subject to a reduction in force, or an employee who is on leave.

This position has recurring access to vulnerable populations.

AmeriCorps Member Eligibility

(a) Eligibility. An AmeriCorps participant must—

(1)(i) Be at least 17 years of age at the commencement of service; or

(ii) Be an out-of-school youth 16 years of age at the commencement of service participating in a program described in §2522.110(b)(3) or (g);

(2)(i) Have a high school diploma or its equivalent; or

(ii) Not have dropped out of elementary or secondary school to enroll as an AmeriCorps participant and must agree to obtain a high school diploma or its equivalent prior to using the education award; or

(iii) Obtain a waiver from the Corporation of the requirements in paragraphs (a)(2)(i) and (a)(2)(ii) of this section based on an independent evaluation secured by the program demonstrating that the individual is not capable of obtaining a high school diploma or its equivalent; or

(iv) Be enrolled in an institution of higher education on an ability to benefit basis and be considered eligible for funds under section 484 of the Higher Education Act of 1965 (20 U.S.C. 1091);

(3) Be a citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States.

(4) Pass a National Sex Offender Public Website Check and National Service Criminal History Check
