As Philanthropy Officer, you’ll identify and qualify a pool of individual donor prospects for Woodland Park Zoo’s major gift pipeline as well as manage a portfolio of mid-level prospects ranging from $1,000 to $4,000. You’ll work closely with the Individual Giving Director and major gift colleagues to identify donors and prospects to move them into major gift portfolios based upon capacity and interest in the zoo’s mission and programs. You’ll also manage a small portfolio of donors that require additional cultivation to increase their giving to major gift levels of $5,000 and above.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work with the Individual Giving Director and team members to identify new leads of mid-level, major, and principal level relationships for the zoo.
  • Work with the Individual Giving Director and the team members to develop new donor engagement opportunities, moving prospects into a deeper relationship with the zoo and future gift conversations.
  • Schedule tours for major gift staff with qualified individuals as appropriate.
  • Professionally articulate the zoo’s mission, vision, and values verbally and in writing to prospects and current donors.
  • Develop positive and professional relationships with lapsed donors to reactivate them at the mid-level or major donor level. Deepen relationships with new and current mid-level donors to increase their giving.
  • Meet annual revenue goals for the mid-level portfolio as established by Individual Giving Director.
  • Implement unique and timely gift-ask opportunities that support and enhance donors’ partnerships and relationships with the zoo.
  • Help create reports/one-pagers to donors regarding zoo programs and impacts.
  • Keep complete and accurate records and produce reports on donor strategies and activities, including: early prospect outreach, identification of new prospects, growth in cumulative giving, dollars raised, donors secured, and handoffs conducted.
  • Track donor activity in the database and track and report fundraising metrics to the Individual Giving Director.
  • Seek to increase the level of mid-level donor giving each year by ensuring proper stewardship and recognition of donors.
  • Conduct solicitations on behalf of the zoo through building relationships with donors.
  • Give donor tours and meetings. Accompany other members of the major giving and development team on donor tours and visits to expand skill set as appropriate.
  • Serve as a liaison for the individual giving team for list pulls and ensure accuracy for upcoming donor events and targeted donor outreach campaigns.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s (BA or BS) degree from an accredited four-year college or university and one or more years’ of non-profit fundraising experience and or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid WA state driver’s license and a safe driving history.
  • Experience in telephone fundraising, cold-calling, or college telefundraising.
  • Ability to initiate and build relationships with prospective donors and interact via telephone and in-person.
  • General knowledge of fundraising concepts and strategies.
  • Ability to building and maintain long-term relationships with donors, potential donors, and volunteers.
  • Demonstrated written, verbal, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Writing skills that demonstrate clarity and precise messaging.
  • Effective public presentation skills in small and large groups.
  • Ability to analyze research with data to align donors with appropriate projects.
  • Ability to synthesize information from various sources and distill it to core messages that are communicated for different audiences.
  • Excellent organization skills with the ability to balance and prioritize multiple tasks and requests to meet deadlines in a professional manner.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively; willingness to share credit for successes.
  • Ability to act with integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality. Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information in a professional manner.
  • High-level familiarity of event planning concepts.
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office, particularly Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. 
  • Ability to work a non-standard/flexible schedule, which may include weekends, some evenings, and holidays.  
  • Commitment to the zoo’s mission and core values. 

PREFERRED SKILLS 

Raiser’s Edge or other equivalent database program experience. 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORK ENVIRONMENT 

  • Reasonable accommodations may be made to perform essential functions. 
  • This position may be required to lift and/or move up to 35 pounds. 
  • Regular exposure to a typical office environment and occasional exposure to outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.  
  • During COVID-19, there may be a combination of remote work and onsite work. 

Pay: $60k per year, plus benefits.
